What minor mods to avoid engine failure
Hello folks, after being away from the Scooby scene for a while i´ve just bought a totally standard 2001 (51 plate) bugeye.
I will at some point get some big mods but for now i just want it to sound abit more throaty without the risk of a third meltdown.
I believe the JDM has two cats.
My question is, If i were to leave the main downpipe cat and get a 3" catback system with a larger end opening and a aftermarket panel filter (Recommendations appreciated)and a walbra 255 fuel pump, would my engine run safe on 97 ron fuel ?, (all i can get round my way )
Also would the car benefit from larger injectors prior to re-map, again just for safety reasons?
And finally, with my limited knowledge, does my JDM have a IHI VF 34 roller bearing turbo as standard.
I have asked a few of these questions via email to Dave at API but i know he is very busy.
Any help would be appreciated.
Jamie.

A bigger fuel pump is always a good thing plus also a remap can actually make your engine safer.
maybe bung an e-mail to Bob Rawle or Andy Forrest

Cheers Chief!
A remap is a definate, but abit expensive at the mo, hence just want to make a few non lethal mods while i save up.
Any idea on a good price at a reputable place?
Richard at Powerstation is the dogs but prices are abit high for my wallet at the mo.
Any more ideas greatly appreciated.
Thanks All

With any half major mods - a remap is a must. Not only to get the most out of the mods but also for saftey.
Personaly I would save up and get it all done at once - hence one mapping session. Not the quick fix you were looking for I know.
But I am also interested in a definative answer?
At what stage do you need a mapping session?
To take it a stage lower.
If you were to say just replace the back box and improve the pannel filter could you safely run that without a remap?

Cheers Steve, Point taken. I can´t afford another re-build!!!
On a similar note, i want to get a Front Mounted Intercooler. I know the obvious ones are blitz, HKS and the like. And also the cheap rubbish. However, i´ve heard Flat4online are quite good and alot cheaper, albeit not as good as HKS and Blitz.
Are they worth considering as a more cost effective option on a relatively modest budget?
All thoughts appreciated, especially from those who have one installed.
Cheers

The best mods you can do before any mods is very simple. The most common cause of an engine failure in a subaru is detonation. Hence - get a knocklink. If your engine is not detting after you put a new mod on, you are fine with it.
It also helps to have an air/fuel gauge as well - but if air/fuel mixture is wrong you will get detonation anyway and knocklink will show you that, so air/fuel gauge is not essential but it doesnt hurt either.

It's Detonation at the wrong time thats bad ................ my views on CockLinks are well known, I think they are a complete and utter waste of money - but, some swear by them.
Better to stick to a backbox only IMO.
As for an Air/Fuel Gauge STOP IT PLEASE, I'm wetting myself!!!!

Now now Peter, stop mis-informing people.
What you actually WANT is combustion - complete, and at the right time.
In 'combustion' speak, detonation is very different. Perhaps you should explain as Scoobynet's self appointed expert?

"Knocking (also called pinking or pinging)— colloquially detonation—in internal combustion engines occurs when air/fuel mixture in the cylinder has been ignited by the spark plug and the smooth burning is interrupted by the unburned mixture in the combustion chamber exploding before the flame front can reach it. The engineered combusting process ceases, because of the explosion, before the optimum moment for the four-stroke cycle. The resulting shockwave reverberates in the combustion chamber, creating a characteristic metallic "pinging" sound, and pressures increase catastrophically"

Bloody hell! With my break from Scoobynet i thought Pete may have been banned for life or at the very least in a nursing home by now!!
Only joking Pete.
So come on! HKS and Blitz can´t be the only company to produce a decent FMIC, then again considering the rip off prices perhaps they are!!!

pslewis, do you have some personal vendetta against knocklinks ? Did a knocklink destroy your life, or take away your wife ?
There is nothing wrong with having a knocklink, and it is indeed a very good tool that can really help you save your engine in time.
If you dont run mods on your car, or if your car can run on **** and still drive normally, it doesnt mean that every other car in the world should be like that.
Once you start modding your car, it is possible that your fuel mixture can become too lean and fuel will ignite too soon and will cause detonation or knocking or pinking - its all the same.

Well according to Richard at Powerstation if an engine is set up right there is no need for one.
There you go.
Or does it give peace of mind
