WHO'S PARANOID
I bloody well am. I've been scooting through different forums. And i'm scared to take my scoob out of the garage. If you don't use this oil or if you put this filter on or rev it too hard or dont use this fuel. Or if your tyres are, or if you dont change this and that. ***** sake i understand getting grades right etc.. but the paranoia about silly things is.....well silly. I drove a my 94 jdm wrx wagon around europe for 5 months with a shagged gearbox,Then a blown head gasket and still got home. These cars are built too last and be driven, albeit sensible cooling down etc.. My mother uses her legacy as a battering ram and has done so for years, and still it goes on. Is it because we spend so much money buying them, modding them etc.. That we dont want to go over 4000 rpm make sure it only as the finest ingredients to live on. But apart from common sense, do you think the subaru engineers thought oh i hope they dont use these cars to there full potential!!! I mean are EVO drivers as paranoid as us lot(well only when it comes to servicing). I can tell you about paranoid, try owning an Audi S2 and RS2 avant(i did, both) and when they go wrong, which they do you better hope the years pay bonus has landed in the bank account. I own and my wife drives in the week my TSL 333 STI V7 Wagon

and she tootles it gives it the odd blat. I take over at the weekend and put it into my local twistys and give it a bit of stick. But it is warmed up and cooled down properly and it is a fantatic bit of kit. Loads better than the audis, cossys and alpina as well as evo bm's i have owned. But if all the paranoia is true. MINES UP FOR SALE...

I remember at the time I was buying my MY99 STI Type-R and the advice on the board was that the V5 had inherently weak engines and gearbox. Needless to say, I had 2 years of perfect motoring and it never let me down once. When I brought my Clio Williams years ago, it too had a reputation of being very fragile.....guess what...years of trouble free motoring.
If you show a degree of mechanical sympathy then things will last.

I use to to be with mine, until I spoke to a few other owners, and went on a few runs with them, now she gets blasted everytime I go out in her(when she is warm) and I always cool her down as well.

Yeah I'm getting to the stage where I'm well paranoid about anything going wrong on the car.
I've got an my96 sti import which I bought last October. Since then I've spent a fair amount of money on it. New MAF@ £280, Speedo(mileometer broke)@£100, Servicing costs(which I new about before I bought it), Respray of the front and rear bumpers (@£345.Due to slight damage from people in car parks). Need to get some new tyres and another service is due soon plus brake discs and pads are due.
I mean I can handle the running costs of the car but anything out of the ordinary crops up scares the life out of me. Vroom bang springs to mind
I run the car on Optimax or SUL+Millers. Warm up, warm down etc.
Had plans to change the zorst new alloys etc etc. But with the other stuff croping up I havn't had the chance to even touch any of that yet.
Please tell me I will one day.
Cheers,
Rich

Hey, any chance you can have a chat with my man then, or maybe its because he drives a van that the word BAM comes litterally, where as I am the subaru driver hehe

I am not paranoid, although reading this site certainly gives you plenty to think about. I just make sure it gets the right oil and run it on optimax. If it blows up during a thrash then atleast I was enjoying myself at the time. All cars will break at some point no matter how you treat them. Might as well enjoy the car as much as possible without constantly worrying about what 'may' go wrong with it. Also remember that people rarely post up "Cars run sweet for 100,000 miles and I've been thrashing it all the time!" type threads, so you will naturally only hear the horror "Gearbox blown to peices" type stories.
Same goes for the women. Treat them properly but dont hold back when it comes to getting your money's worth. As with cars, you'll always be able to pick up another one.

It's just a car after all.
I went on this site shortly after buying my wagon and didn't realise how complicated it could be!
Sod it all. 95 RON NUL will do nicely!
Do the sti 5 door come with tinted rear windows as standard?

Decent oil, decent petrol, properly serviced, driven with mechanical sympathy= No need to be paranoid. Ones that go wrong under these conditions are the exception that proves the rule.
ENJOY IT!! :-)
