Question

I'm looking at buying my first impreza turbo and have a budget of aprox £10k. (4 door UK model)
I really want a 97'P' regd or newer (Facelift model), but i'm not sure i'll be so lucky to get hold of a decent one for this kind of money? Unless it has high miles!
Or would i be better off going for an older model with lower miles?
The mileage thing is an issue here for 2 reasons: 1st - Future resale problems, and 2nd - I'm paranoid about getting a scoob that has the No.4 cylinder piston slap problem!
Do all early impreza's suffer from piston slap? (See, I'ts the paranoid thing kicking in again!)

MrWood,

You should be able to get a decent one for 10k, that is approximately book value, although alot of the ones I have seen for sale are going for more, but you should be able to get something without too much trouble.

I too am in the process of buying my first Scooby. I have a budget of about £9000 and went to look at a MY95 UK model today - 75k miles, FSH etc. Condition was OK and acceptable for the money.

Depending on your priorities you may be better going for an import. Of the ones I have seen they have been really good condition. For me though maximising fuel econ and insurance are key criteria - not sure yet whether the WRX's fit into this.

The piston slap problem only occurred between 10,000 and 20,000 miles so would have been cured under the Subaru 60,000 mile warranty for UK cars.

Just found this on the Autotrader website:

SUBARU Impreza 2.0 Turbo, Oct
98/S, met green, aircon, uprated turbo/intercooler, high RA wing, Gold Speedline alloys, Sti int/Momo wheel, UK car, only 23k, beautiful car, quick sale £9800 ono, Paul 01962 732643/ 0468 482994 (P)

It is slightly out of my price range but gives you an idea of what you can get. There are a few around this price range on the site

That seems a bit cheap having seen what they normally sell at and bearing in mind how much I got for my similar age and higher mileage sport!

Cool

£9500 bought me the BRD STi 2 linked wagon, which is faster than a standard 22B

So bargains are out there!

The last car for £9250 is in Northern Ireland (according to the phone code) and they have often been cheaper for scooby on autotrader!

The Green MY99 one from Ireland is a printing mistake - it is in Top Marques this week for £12,250.

Shame as I was going to get it

I know the markets bad but even the 98 'S' mentioned sounds too cheap? Surely a dealer would buy it for cash at slightly more than this price after a bit of phoning round?

I sold my 97 'R' to a dealer a year ago for £14100 cash and thought I'd got a bad price!

Remember to HPI check any car purchased.

Cheers,

Ian.

Cool

Thanx for the replys!

Seems that HPI reflects price on some of these 'fresh from the body-shop' scoobs!

I'm not in a rush, so i'm gonna sit tight and wait for a sweet blue mica 4dr UK! (You never know!!!

Import is out of the question due to insurance rip offs.

Piston slap was a worry coz 'Simon A' bought his 42k miles 'P'reg from the subaru dealer in sheffield, and that had horrendous piston slap! Subaru UK put it right for him with a new short block.
Has anyone had a new engine fitted by subaru because of piston slap, on a car well out of warranty???
