I bet its the 105 bhp diesel which is underpowered for such a big car, tell your firm not to buy the taxi spec next time, I suspect Suresh has the 140 bhp one which would be a much better drive.

I have the new shape 140bhp TDi saloon (and before that 130bhp TDi and 110bhp TDi old shape). This was the first one that the dealer had ever supplied (July 2005). It's quick enough in a straight line and does over 50mpg. How many Scoobies have a fuel tank range of 700 miles? Boring as hell though, but fine for work and long family journeys. I'll probably get another one this summer (maybe estate).
You're right about the stupid handbrake button though. I'm used to it now, but I still think it's a rubbish idea.

I parked it outside my neighbours house, (he's a body shop manager so he will have had loads in), he was wetting himself at the car just going up and down instead of driving off, couldnt sus the button out for quite a while

I always think about the poor buggers who get them as hire cars. They probably end up spending a fortnight with their families trying to get out of the airport car-park!
By the way I thnk it says somewhere in the manual about using the electronic handbrake button at slow speed for emergency braking. DO NOT TRY THIS. I did (of course!) and it nearly ripped the back axle off the car!

I drove the 140bhp one today - work car.
Nice and tight with a nice push to it. Bit sterile, but aren't all new cars unless 'sports' cars?
I, *ahem* drove it with spirit, and it gave 38mpg on a 40 mile run (15 in London traffic, rest on clear A1). I reckon if it were my fuel in it I'd have got 45+mpg.
New, normal cars are all the same now, more or less. Boring. Economics rule.

Had a 2.0tdi 55 plate estate, one of the first in the country........... I was over the moon, alas the honeymoon soon ended.
Car has now gone back to VW and I have ordered a new shape Mazda 6 sport estate.
Here are some but not all of the faults I had with the Passat.
3 x climate control panels
2 x engine cooling fans
2 x glow plugs
2 x internal fan blower unit (you know the one that circulates air around the cabin)
1 x fuel pump (that was a nice experience when it failed in the outside lane of the motorway, thankfully only me in the car and not the kids)
1 x fuel cooler (sits just below the passanger rear door underneath the vehicle, was hanging down dragging on the floor - hmmmm, another not very dangerous fault)
Now the above all happened during a 2 year period, and in many cases I would deem dangerous, cutting out @ 80mph = not good, fuel cooler dragging on floor = not good, interior fan unit cutting out whenever it felt like it = front screen would mist up and you could not see where you were going................ need I go on?
Basically it was the least reliable car I have ever had the displeasure of running, it was great when it was working but alas itspent so much time in the garage it was beyond belief and was returned to VW 12 months before it due date!
I was offered another one........... I won't type my response as it may offend the faint hearted .
Roll on late March and hipefully the Japenese Mazda will outshine the very poor experience I had with the VW badge.
A real shame as the passat was a great place to be when it ws working but all to often it didn't work as it should have.
Did I mention all the warranty recalls......................... I won't bore you with the details but they were numerous!
Regards
GB
p.s. the handbrake was great once you got used to it.

Works in all the 40+ cars I have access to. From a Pug 1.4 to a BMW M6
The M6 is a rarety to use though, alas Had it once and it scared me, despite my driving qualifications. Hits a ton in a blink.
