Ideal motorway car for £1.5k?
Is there such a thing? Needs to return 40mpg and be a low insurance group of around group 7 and do motorway speeds comfortably.
If I use the Mrs Rover 214 it will do 240 miles on £30 which roughly works out at 39 miles to the gallon and is dirt cheap to run.
If it needed replacing is there anything that could do it as well for a maximum of £1500 that doesn't have space travel mileage (i.e. over 100k as Rover has only 84k on it)?

Passat 1.8 20v, great motorway car, is comfortable, will do 35-40mpg, and will sit at 85 all day, and thanks to long 5th gear is quiet when doing so!

Makes no odd what insurance group they are, it is ££££ you need to concern yourself with. My last car was an insurance 18 Volvo V70R chiptuned beyond 300hp.
My current Alfa 156 JTD is £80 more, the cheapest I could get!!! Any one of the suggested rep mobiles will be a couple of hundred quid a year if you are over 25 and you have behaved. Expect to pay more if you are younger or you are a criminal.
If your primary concern is pence per mile, and you need CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP you could get a ford/peugeot diesel fiesta/106 n/a d. Should be peanut's to keep on the road, handle 70mph ok and manage 50mpg. Mights save you a few quid over the bigger stuff?

VW Passat Tdi
My old man bought his when it was less than a year old in 1998. He still cannot part with it. It gives great economy, a great family car, comfortable to drive, not sluggish, solid mechanically as well as bodywise, simply you just cant go wrong with one.
O not to mention the car is in need of a major service very soon and even then I went from Bradford to Cardiff. Drove around Cardiff to Newport, Drove around Newport back up to Sheffield, Drove around Sheffield and back to Bradford on £40 worth of diesel for the full journey. 18 miles left to Bradford and the fuel light come on. When filling the car before leaving bradford in the morning the car needed fuel immediately as the reserve light was flashing.
I really do feel like getting a new shape Passat as a family run around. Excellent cars

Thanks again for the replies. I'm liking the passat tdi's but they all have high mileage but would it be correct to say they are very well built and go on for a very long time, one on autotrader has 228k on it?

next to no difference really mate.
If you want a real bargin get an Octavia tdi same engine as the Passat and if its anything like a vRS will be cheaper to insure than the equivalent golf/bora/a3

Ford Focus 3-dr 1.8 Zetec (petrol) 'workhorse'
My 1999 model has done 130k of motorway mileage and returns 33mpg during the winter & 37mpg during the warmer months no more or no less.
104 miles per day of M6 & M1, Serviced once a year, at around 30k intervals & has passed every MOT it has been too. Oil does not need topping up during this time.
Insurance, Fully Comp £ 230
Value for money & it is the best car I have driven....

regarding 90 and 110, personally i think you can tell considerably they are two different cars. The drive is different but then again that could be me picking on a slight lack of performance. I personally feel a big defference between the powers. Id say dont go for one less than 110 as it has some what of a kick for a normal diesel

I got the wrong dealership so its not from the prestige one next door to it but looks like they still deal in bmws and vw's so will go and look and take for a test drive.
Its a 110 estate, but not the sport and no air con but then for that i'd be looking at higher miles or price. Only an extra £90 on the insurance for 9 or so months left to run from the Rover 214si

The 110s tune very nicely indeed, Jabbasport and others do remaps for around £200 that will give you 135bhp and 220 ft-lb of torque without affecting mpg.
The injection system is much simpler on these pre-PD motors too, they last a LONG time

Is that from experience, as experience tells me after owning 9 german cars in the family that reliability is one reason we stuck with German cars particularly Audi and VW

Well back from seeing the car. Test drove it and pulled well and sounded fine engine and gearbox wise. Air leak in sunroof though as above 40mph it started to whistle and the whistle went away as soon as I opened the sunroof so possible seal needs replacing. Rear passenger electric window didn't work, motor was going but glass didn't move. Rear discs need changing in the very near future although has just passed MOT. 7K miles until the cam belt needs doing.
Those are just what I noticed and they haven't touched the car since it came it 6 days ago so might be other stuff.
I said I was a cash buyer and wanted cam belt done, rear discs done and sunroof and window fixed and i'd offer 2k cash. The bloke wouldn't move from the asking price of £2.2k and wouyldn't even do the cam belt for full asking price and for £2k he said would only be able to do that price if I took it how it was with no warranty.
I walked away after politely saying no thanks. Oh well will have to keep looking.
Oh and he said he couldn't do the cam belt as the garage he uses for servicing (part of the same premises) charged £350+ vat for the cam belt! My performance tuning garage I use for the vRS said £230 all in including other parts they change the same time as the cam belt! The bloke was having a laugh not doing any discount/deal for a cash buyer.

I'd liked to see where. Its the cheapest Passat for the mileage, anything cheaper is 140k + on miles. Even doing a 200 mile search on autotrader didn't throw anything better up. 113k is really pushing my limit as it is, 140k + I wouldn't even bother looking at.
