Default My new bike has arrived!

A Giant Defy 1.

My first road bike since my late teens and the bike I should have bought 5 years ago instead of a hybrid!

I think I might need a different computer though as the wasn't enough room between the fork and spoke to mount my Aldi special correctly. I hope it won't fall off!

Hopefully I'll get out on it tonight for my first taste of SPD clip-less pedaling!

Nice one

Make sure the SPD's are as slack as they can go and practice beforehand. Concentrate on taking one foot out at a time

Weather round your end looks better than here in Cumbria

Yes, the pedal spring tensions are wound right back and I've been cycling up and down our road practising twisting my foot out

Left foot out, left foot out

LEFT FOOT OUT

That way WHEN you have a clipless you fall away from traffic.

iv got the same cable tie arrangement on my tt bike ( holding the sensor on ) , was only thinking bout it yesterday - if that was nudged by accident it would be very expensive

That's one of the things I like about my Madone: the fork mounted sensor is embedded IN the fork. It looks very swish

20 gears

Confusingly, clip-less means that your feet clip into the pedals!

Comes from when you had toe-clips to keep your feet attached to the pedals - attached without clips = clipless

EVERYONE and I mean everyone who has clipless pedals has a 'moment'. I've had several

That is a fine bike: 105 front and rear, with a 50/34 matched with 12/28 will get you climbing hills no problem and give you a good turn on the flat.

Only 20 gears? Pathetic! My bike has 27 and it only cost me £300!

Ah yes, the moment you find yourself lying in the road, floundering like a fish out of water.

I know. I at looked Bianchi, Boardman and Giant bikes but the spec of the Giant and then a good test ride swung it.

Just been out and my average speed on a short 12mile loop has gone from a typical 16.5mph to 17.4mph

It was amazing how much more 'planted' I felt with the SPDs as opposed to flats and Adidas trainers! I might even wind the tension in on the pedals a turn tomorrow.

The front derailleur is catching the chain though on the large front cog. I'll have to have a fiddle!

Just wanted to recommend the service at Ron Spencer Cycles in Warrington as well. Great deal on the bike and shoes even though it was through the cycle to work scheme.

Steve

Nice looking bike, thinking of getting something similar next year as I bought a hybrid too and want a road bike now.
I've had a few moments with my spd's never actually fallen off (touch wood) but certainly had a few narrow escapes! Wouldn't be without them though.

Oddly enough....

(aaaand Ultegra )

On the Madone today, stopped a lady from committing to a daft overtake by the simple expedient of accelerating to 30

Actually, a buck of dry sand/cement for brushing into the joints wouldn't go a miss either

I am the cycling equivalent of a Fiesta Zetec S or an FT-86.

The chassis is far more capable than the engine

20 gears? I remember riding up a hill once with my mate. We were so fooked we could barely breath. And this 65 year old came flying past, telling us it was such a nice day as he flew past! The shock on my face when I discovered he only had 1 gear!!!!

Kieran Burns was out cycling. He tracked 12.14 mi in 37m:00s.
Personal best 10 miles of 28m:45s which is a 1m:38s improvement.

Carbon bikes are great fun (my commute home tonight)

Was in a similar position earlier this week going up a hill only just keeping up with a guy a few years older than me on a single speed racer, had him on the downhill but he could really use that one gear he had.
