Default Vuvuzela complaints

The BBC gets 545 vuvuzela complaints, see link http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertain...s/10317767.stm

What are the BBC going to do about it, they arent blowing the things themselves?!

i heard they are altering the sound so they are not so obvious, itv HD have done something tonight as the brazil game is not too bad, you can hear individual horns and more crowd noise, and the commentary level seems higher, much more bearable now, the swarm of bees sound has more or less gone thank ****.

It must be very complex sound filtering, as its sat right in the middle of the freq spectrum of hearing. I must admit the crowd are more audible.

Brasil game sound pretty normal to me (****) maybe because I'm not on HD? These bloody things are ruining the world cup TBH, when Brasil scored earlier on there wasnt any cheering, shouting or any celebration that I could hear of its just the same constant drone of these f,ing things from to kick off to full time regardless of what happens in the match.

since its an african tradition and they wont be banned etc, take over our footie hardcore thugs, thats our tradtion isnt it ?

anyhoo, hop the filtering works as said, no cheering when goals are scored,if im out the room its only the commentator that gives it away, usually you can tell when a goal is scored !!

If a sound is split into two channels, then the phase is inverted in one of them and the two channels are recombined, then there is a very noticable drop in the perceived volume of that sound. It's the principle behind noise-cancelling headphones, or systems to reduce road noise in car cabins by playing a phase-inverted reproduction of the road noise through the ICE system. The cancellation effect is not total with a simple global inversion like this because every natural sound is composed of a range of frequencies, and the phase varies. Special computer jiggery-pokery can make cancellation almost absolute. I suspect that this is what has been done.

Yep its a drone but it didn't bother me - it does get noisier when a corner is won etc.

Must say during the Brazil game I didn't notice them as much, perhaps the N. Koreans censored them

I guess its fairly easy to filter them out; the horns are pretty much a single tone, most of the same note. so just cut out that frequency or as Bub says just feed an inverse of the sound thats 180degrees out of phase to cancel it out. ONly do it on the audio feed from the microphones in the stands, so commentator audio is unaffected (assuming the sound proofing in the commentator boxes are adequate).

I did something similar to above at college with a bunch of op amps and variable resistors; Can't for the life of me remember what the hell for though. I wonder if I still have the circuit in the attic somewhere, I'm sure I could modify it into a Vuvuzela filter

It's a World Cup in Africa FFS.......I want to hear what that sounds like, not some artificially manipulated product. We have to put up with idiotic chants and songs at English games, why not get the atmosphere of these games?

It's a bit like travelling the world and demanding bangers and mash wherever you go!

I spent a whole month touring round SA and never heard a toot from one of the ruddy things.

A tube of plastic made in China is about as authentic as Jordan's *****.

I spent all of last week in England and didn't hear anyone singing football songs either.

I just find it frustrating that the western world (and the English in particular) travel the world to find strange and wonderful places to visit then completely **** them up by trying to make them just like home.

The Brazil/N Korea match was so well played by each side that I hardly noticed the trumpets. I think the noise had been reduced in fact.

It was heartening to see good football being played and in such an excellent sporting spirit from each side too.

If the England team was watching that I bet they have got a bit of thinking to do.
