Unhappy TV just blew up...so...

My 32" Loewe Credo just died - loud bang and burning smell So, off to the repair shop it goes, but I have to face the inevitable prospect that despite only being 7 years old it might be uneconomic. It's a great shame, it has the most natural looking picture of any TV I've ever seen.

Most of the current LCD and plasma sets I've seen are, frankly, rubbish - oversaturated colours and excessive sharpening, designed to look vivid and detailed but failing miserably. I don't have any HD sources and am very happy with my Tivo and DVD player.

With that in mind, does anyone know of a good TV shop in the Hants / Surrey area that I can use to compare potential replacements, or can anyone recommend a new set (around 36") that might suit me?

You're going to struggle to find a CRT, we've just been through the same thing. Ended up with a 32" LCD from LG. Now it's been in place for a couple of months and I mucked around with the settings it gives a reasonable picture.

My Loewe DVD player packed up 2 weeks ago. It was 7.5 - 8 years old. Have they got in-built timers or something?

Can't help with shops around your way unfortunately.

Andy wouldnt mind knowing what the problem is with your TV, as a similar thing happened to mine

upon opening it up I found the internal fuse had blown, so replaced it, turned the TV back on, and the deguassing mechanism kicked in, then the fuse went again, but not had chance to have it looked at yet

Well, I plugged in a SCART cable, the picture came up OK, then five seconds later there was this loud bang... I think something latched up

Loewe tv's give one of the best pictures out in my opinion. Unfortunately you will struggle to find many brands that come anywhere near that picture quality.

Loewe again is the way forward.

My Loewe Acconda has gong wrong twice in the last 7 years, power supply and then the line transformer. Both easy and economic repairs, I'll be keeping it patched up for the foreseeable future, still haven't seen anything else to match it.

Interesting... mine went back under warranty a few years ago - it needed a whole new tube after being left switched off for a couple of weeks when we went on holiday. (No, I don't get it either!)

So, maybe not the most reliable TVs in the world, though - but some of the best performing when they do work.

Yup, and me too, best offer was a 28" JVC which was OK at best compapared to my old Sony.

Ended up with A Samsung 32" LCD whic is actually pretty good with a decent signal input and once set up. just over £ 500.00

Dixons are a lot cheaper for the Samsung, £488 inc delivery. There is an offer on for half price stands as well if you need one.

Agreed, we dropped our CRT moving the room around so little choice, may move the LCD to the bedroom when the technology moves on

A decent plasma with prgressive scan will give an excellent picture with very natural colours when the picture is set up properly.

We bought a Sony 40" W-series LCD 1080p and it's fantastic.

About £1300 from Dabs.com now.

So, how did you decide which one to go for?

I popped into Currys on the way home this evening - they have a really good selection of different models, but they're all showing different material of widely varying quality, from Blu-ray discs to p*ss poor weak terrestrial UHF signals.

Most of the pictures I saw were, as per my earlier recollection, rubbish: noisy, blocky, posterised, smeary, grey, washed-out... you name a picture defect, there was a TV that exemplified it. Faced with a set that seems to think there should be a black halo around a golf ball, it's hard to really give a stuff about whether it's 1080i or 'only' 768p capable.

In other words, as a way to pick a telly, reading the spec sheets is a waste of time. The one I liked best was an LG at a depressing £1200 - but even that might just have been because it was in a manufacturer-specific display with a proper HD source, no doubt put together by LG technical staff to show off their tellies properly.

Help!

You should find any Panasonic or Pioneer 37" plasma will do the trick for you. Picture quality should be comparable to your old set (if not better) but avoiding the over saturated LCDs.

I dont know where you are geographically but I've been pointing people at sound and vision online in Bury. Seem to be very cheap and good service.

The plasma screen is pretty much the same as the old CRT performance wise but you get half your room back!

Sharp LC-37XD1E £800.

Excellent set, but some sets suffer from banding, allegedly. Have a look here. Happy reading!!
