New York Taxi's.
Gotta catch a cab from JFK to Manhattan approx 20-00 tomorrow evening.
Anyone know approx cost and what cabs are "genuine"?
Working at LHR I know the problems with rogue taxi drivers around here, and dont want to get ripped off. A foreign collegue got charged £56 from Terminal 3 to Egham last week!
Thanks.

You can't miss them, they're big and yellow! Leg room is crap, thanks to the huge divider behind the front bench
You'll probably get approached by people trying to hustle you into a private hire type thingy, just say no thanks and wait in line for a yellow cab. About $30-40 is right, but they will expect a tip, as does everyone else who provides a service! 15% is about right.

Flew into there last week, theres a taxi rank outside the front you can tell whos genuine not only by their yellow cabs but also the fact they dont ask you if you want to get in!

What Class A said...at JFK the taxi rank has a "yellow medallion" cab dispatcher. Suited up, usually quite a friendly fellow
Genuine yellow cabs, are...wait for it yellow and have some medallion thingy rivited on the bonnet (nearside I think). Most are Ford Crown Victorias, or chevy Caprice's, but sometimes you do get the odd station wagon or 4x4. You will pay the going rate, they are all metered.
However, a little warning, Taxi drivers in NY is often the 1st step on the career ladder for immigrants. Although they maybe legal and legit. If your unlucky, you'll get a driver who can't speak English and has very questionable driving skills - so put your seat belt on!
But that's no different to the mini-cabs round where I live in the UK, so i'm used to it

Getting BACK to the airport, book a fixed-price limo - managed to get stung for $100 once when traffic was horrendous. For $50 or so you'll get a pimpmobile and not feel out of place doing so.

Don't NY cabs still give receipts? I thought they were pretty rip-off free. Probably because the roads are a grid, it would be easier to spot if you were going round the houses to get somewhere. I found NY yellow cabs were cheaper and less prone to ripping you off than London black cabs.
Make sure you have the perpendicular road name of the place you're going as well. Rather than just 12345 Broadway, it would be 12345 Broadway and 7th Street, for example.

Are the guys we used when we last went.
There's lots to choose from - No guarantees - But they did turn up at the airport when we arrived and at the Hotel to take us back .
Tell Herb (I think that was his Name) that Jason sent you and I'm sure he'll say "Who ?" .
