Mine went pop on saturday night... more of a whining noise in certain gears. Third gear was my down fall.

ouch im praying mine dosent follow yours its in all gears after a little test drive and some listening in i think i might have a gearbox mount gone as there was a knock that sounds like a broken mount would this be why its making noise or should i speak to my insurance and arrange breakdown cover just incase

could be pinion head bearing in the rear diff mate, mine whines and it changes note dependent on being on overrun or on the throttle.

Sounds like it could be the diff mate, only real way of telling is to have the car suspended on a ramp and run it in gear and have someone underneath to listen.
I run my own workshop so have ramps available to me!

when i bought the car the rear diff would click and clunk like a driveshaft was loose or something but that has gone after my pal had a look and a drive then i noticed some fool put 55 series tyres on the rear instead of 50 like the fronts so it might have buggered the diff as the rear wheels are not turning the same as the fronts ,dam your 3 hours from me
