Recomend me a Linux distro
Have dicked around before but ready to put a full time build on an older laptop.
Previously tried Ubuntu and Suse and no objections to either
Needs to be free, well supported and look pretty.
Personal recommendations please, I can do google on my own

redhat was free then was chargeable (for some utils like auto updating). Might have to pay fully for it now - not looked into it for ages.
Fedora was conceived when Redhat started charging. . .

Ubuntu, kubuntu and xbuntu are one and the same, you don't move from one to the other per say, you just use a different desktop environment (GNOME, KDE, and Xfce respectively)

Mint's a pretty setup but the repo's are a bit behind sometimes There's a new google-style one (unfortunately not their inhouse version) that's supposed to be pretty snazzy but i haven't played with it yet.
As for ubuntu not looking pretty enough .....
Hardy running gnome and a few tweaks to adjust colours etc on my laptop :-

Mint going well as evidenced by my presence here from said machine.
Liked the way it could be installed from within windows (new to me, not sure if others do this now too) and I can access all the files on my drive.
I had prepared for complete wipe but may now keep alongside.
Spent an hour foofin about with fonts though, had forgotten how much I dislike the unix rendering of fonts. Looking good now.
Will live with it for a couple of days and see how it is.
It's just a laptop so not looking for it do anything flash, just mail, web, office and multimedia well.
