Question

I'm currently looking at language options for developing an inventory control system, and someone has floated the idea of using flash for the front end.
Has anyone had experience using it for decent sized apps ? I've only seen it used for simple games and a diary/calender thing, but am wondering if it could be safely used for larger apps. The app I'm looking at will need to cope with up to 500 users max.

Anyone heard of any larger apps done in flash ? What back-end was it using ?

kart_man,

been looking at this too, seems a great way to deliver apps and the plug-in is alot smaller than say a Java VM, theres an example app here if you havent found anything:

Its how I make my money - I think you will see more and more flash apps starting to appear as people begin to realise it is a lot more powerful than silly little animations that the VB Developers claim all its good for!!!! Flash MX is more or less at the stage that you can do anything you want with it challenges on a postcard plz.

fusion,

yeah how about a multi-threaded disk defragmenter that runs as an NT service? seriously though what Ive seen is good, how easy is it to do treeviews, listviews, grids and the like? The actionscript looks a little like (in my limited knowledge cos I dont touch it) VBA, is that so? How easy is it call server side SQL+Stored procs?

cheers

treeviews, listviews, grids and the like? No Problem!! most are prebuilt components.

As far as loading stored procedures in internet based upsthis is easy as the call will be handles by CF or some other middleware and the recordset passed to flash via the remoting interface. If your looking at doing this locally without a connection then it becomes more involved but you can get ActiveX/OLE object support with some third party tools.

Actionscript looks like any other scripting language on the surface but it is in fact very capabable OOP under the bonnet.

It rocks to those who know!

The MX versions of both shockwave (director) and flash are getting quite capable in terms of database integration, e-commerce, etc...

I keep meaning to convert my front-end shopping cart code over to flash, but haven't had the opportunity yet. There's a good example of one on the macromedia site.

I've got a decent book in the house. I'll dig it out tonight and give you the title.

Or check the macromedia site..

fusion,

so how about custom controls then, can you create them? I use Delphi and the great thing is you can use the standard controls or just buy or build if you need something specific, say like an outlook bar or something like that.
