Craig, I can answer both questions
Firstly the modem Squell.
Open AOL and click on Setup, then select Expert setup
Select the Devices tab and right click on your modem and select Edit Device. In there, there will be a setting that says something like Modem speaker. By default it is set to Low and not to Off. Set it to Off and save settings and exit AOL. Next time you connect it will be silent
Secondly, your mail settings preference. This can be found from within Internet explorer funny enough. Open Internet explorer and selection, Tools/Options. On the 6th tab (called Programs) select AOL 7.0 to be your default mail program. Save settings and then run AOL. Click on an E-mail shortcut and it should open AOL
Hope these helps

So the modem is still squelling? hmm. You could try and set the speaker volume to off in the Windows Control Panel.
Start/ Settings/Control panel/Phone and modem Options/Modems tab/Properties of modem/Modem tab/Speaker volume to Off etc.
It’s weird though. All the time I have used AOL (About 6 years in all) I have never had the set the speaker Volume to Off in the control panel to dial into AOL. Setting it to Off in the AOL settings usually does the trick
Give it a bash and let me know.

Craig, I have a link to the enetbot code at home. I'll mail you later this evening.
Probably a bit drastic, but have you tried re-installing AOL? I don't think it will work, but you never know.
