Default FISHY SMELL

Hi guys, took the scooby out last night after a month, but seems to have some issues.

1. Smell like burning in the cabin hard to explain then dissapeared.

2. brake judder, slightly when at low speed but when at around 50mph and i brake there is alot of vibration in the pedal. when i came and parked outside my house there was a strong fishy smell coming from the front drivers side wheel only. The brake judder has gotten worse.

The front discs have about 600 miles on them new pads, i rebuilt all calipers and new pads and discs on rear. I have bedded them in properly and cleaned intensely before putting everything back.

There was slight rusting on discs but that dissapeared after normal braking.

I have done a search....

Please i need your Advice.

Could be you have a sticking brake pad. Most friction materials use binders or matrices made from boiled fish bones guts etc. that's what produces the gas that creates fade. A stuck pad would also explain your judder.

As above, the burning COULD also be a slight oil weep from the rocker cover gasket. It's common, and drips onto the headers, which, when they warm up, burn it off.

If the car has been left for some time, it's likely that the discs have corroded. Try a few "from speed" hard brakings.

If one caliper is getting hot, it IS likely to be a stuck piston.

Thanks for the replies guys, I took the car out again and done a mixture of heaving breaking and cooldown procedure but there is definately severe brake judder.

Especially from high speed braking were the whole dash is shaking, there is a very slight judder at slow speed eg 30mh.

I have rebuilt the calipers, i dont think the brake calipers would be siezed?

It seems strange as the judder was there before i replaced the rear discs and now has got alot worse.

Could the front discs be warped after such a short time? or could the pads be at fault?

The discs COULD be warped, you could get the runout checked. Have you had a wheel off and inspected both sides of the discs for evidence of deposits?

Or remove the discs, clean the mating surfaces THOROUGHLY and try again.

Subaru 4 pots?

How did you re-build the caliper? Did you have the pistons out, new seals etc?

Sounds like classic-fourpot-seized-piston-itis to me. Especially as only one side is smelling. I' be stripping the wheel off checking the pads are free to move and levering each piston a little to make sure they're all free. If they are then I'd whip the discs off, clean all mounting faces and re-fit. If the judder is still there then I'd look at getting the run out checked.......

Thanks alot guys for your replies, i took the car out for a drive and the fishy smell has gone. I think the car wasnt driven for a while and i think that was the case, but the judder is terrible.

Hi blu, i took the 4pots off and pulled all the boots and pistons out. Cleans all the pistons with wire wool and scotch pad and fitted all new seals, boots etc.

I do agree with you, im going to get the wheels off and make sure the pistons are moving freely also the brake discs and that there is no residue.

I'll keep all of you posted after the tear down.

Thank you.
