MY99 pads/disks on MY94?
#1
Guys & gals; I'm looking to buy some disk kit from Adem in the Private forum. Can anyone let me know if they will fit an MY94? Will there be much improvement? I understand that the MY94 brakes are crap, and Subaru didn't get around to designing decent brakes until much more recently.
Cheers

Er.. you can all take your time, cos my Scoobies in the shop having a major front-end rebuild
Adem, I will still get the brakes if they fit, and fit them MUCH later
pilch (feeling sorely inadequate in his loaned Saxo 1.1)

Pilch, yes they should fit as long as you get all of the bits required, calipers, pipework, pads and disks and any fittings, no probs and they will improve the car quite a bit.
What happened ? sounds nasty

Erm.. I kinda didn't stop in time when the guy in front did. I hit him at about 10-20mph after slowing from 30-40. He had a towbar, nuff said
Needless to say I require new wings, bonnet, rad, fans, lights, power steering belt, bumper and a lot of sub rework to sort out the huge dent under the bonnet rest.
Not a happy bunny..
Heh! These brakes may save me next time then? Too late now though! <sob!>

Calipers - Things that squeeze the pads onto the disc
Discs - The friction surface that the pads work against
Pads - Friction material that gets forced against Disc
Bells - These are the things that attach the disc to the hubs - On a road car these are not normally seen as the disc is all in one.
The AP kit is of course fit for purpose and they will supply all bits

Sorry to hijack your thread
I have noticed a few people selling my99 brake setups; are these a worthwhile improvement over the my97 setup, I have 16 wheel so clearance will not be a problem. Is it me or have my brakes got worse since upgrading to 16 wheels ?

AP-racing do a very good brake kit which includes discs, bells, 4-piston calipers, pads and fixing kit.
If this is a too much Performance Friction do a very good carbon mettalic pad at around £150.

Oh bloody hell! WHats all this caliper, bell, fixing kit etc? Could someone please inventory parts required for a brake upgrade? Adem is supplying pads and disks only! Eek!

Ok I am assuming you really don't know, the caliper is the large black (normally) cast (normally again) thing bolted over the disk, they are the brakes you press the pedal which pressurises the fluid, which moves down the pipes, moving the pistons which press the pads against the disk slowing the car. the number of pistons normal dictates the power by incresing the swept area (i'm excluding sliding calipers here) If you change the disks to larger items you need to move your existing caliper (not recommended) or get the calipers and any brackets etc needed to suit the new disks, when changing disks you should change the pads to prevent premature wear on the new disks

Cheers Sheridan.
I have an MY94 WRX with stock brakes. So, do I need new calipers, brackets, bell etc? What are the relevant costs?
J, if you read this, drop me a line with your answer!

I'm afraid I really don't know any scooby specific details, Know a lot about Brembo Goldlines on bikes but nothing about scooby's, hence I questioned whether they are better on a 99 than a 97

Pilch,
I've done this upgrade myself, and it is pretty simple. The only bits you need are the disks, calipers, pads (advisable to replace these), brake host mounting clips and the brake lines themselves (different on 2-pot and 4-pot)and erm.... that's it!.
Everything fits on directly, so there are no other items required. This is a pretty easy DIY job, but be careful and test them carefully afterwards.
Rgds,
Alex

pilch,
unless you get the calipers from Adem as well, then the pads and discs will be no use, as they will not work with your existing brake calipers.
Also, if you do get the calipers, then you will need at least 16 inch alloys fitted to give sufficient clearance. Warning though, not all 16 or 17 inch alloys will clear the 4 pot calipers!

The standard Subaru 16" wheels will clear them fine, if you are fitting them it may pay to get Goodridge hoses (about 60 quid'ish for all 4 lines i think) and some race brake fluid while you have it all off of the car, will save you having to do it later.
You will definitely need, Disks, Calipers, Brake lines, fluid and pads, also as has been said before, new pads would be a good idea.

Thanks guys. Whilst I think about it, Adem is only supplying front pads/disks. That would leave an abnormal balance in my braking arrangement. Would that be a problem?
