Default Speedo fail on MY99 Classic

This morning my Speedo failed on MY99 UK turbo classic. I only noticed after about 2 miles, so not sure if it was working at all today. (Hadn't driven for about a week) I did see it randomly jump up, have a stutter, and then return to zero during the drive.

Are these electric with sensor or mechanical drive?

Anybody else seen this issue and know the fix?

There has been a bit of rain, so wondering if its an electrical gremlin due to moisture.

99 cars are electronic with sensor.

I'd get the gearbox sensor checked out first, might be corrosion or a wire off, get it on a ramp it might be obvious.

Then look at the connector to the instruments, if all else fails a new set of clocks isn't dear and takes about 30 minutes to fit.

Thanks for the info, will check it out. Where would I locate the gearbox sensor?

Now that, I can't help with. There's only two wires going to the gearbox though on a standard car (non-DCCD), reversing light, (usually one wire) and speedo sensor.

If you can get someone to put it on a ramp you should get a decent view.

okay, no probs. Thanks for letting me know. Going for a new maf a coolant temp sensor next week so will have a look when on ramps just before it gets remapped (to suit the replacement MAF).

On the 1998 impreza the speedometer sometimes fails and it is down to bad soldering on the back of the clocks and is a known fault with the v4 1998.Have you tried giving the top of the dash above the clocks a reasonable bump with your hand when the car is being driven to see if that does anything.

Hi, Thanks for the note. It came alive again last night. You could be right. Thanks for the tip i'll be checking the sensor on the gear box for any wiring issues, and if that doesn't work i'll look for this solder joint fix. Found quite a few bits of info on line under '99speedofix'
I'll also try the good old 'fonz' (happy days juke box move) whack it if not working trick, which could point toward the bad earth/ground on the clocks. (showing my age a little there!)
Cheers all

Heeeeeyyyyyyy!

If it turn out to be that, simply remove the clocks, identify the joint and touch it with a hot soldering iron, holding it still as it cools to solid again.
