Are these budget....?

MODS - Please leave this in here for the afternoon as I need a quick answer due to having bald tyres!!!!
I have called a few tyre fitters and they are telling me that the Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres are budget and I would be lucky to get 4000 miles out of a set! Is this the case for people who have used them or are they just trying to squeeze a few extra pounds out of me? All tyre fitters are suggesting the Bridgestones are the best. All comments welcome.

My F1 GS-D2 on standard 16s last 15,000 miles. Complete mix of driving - high speed motorway runs across Spain through to fun in the twisties.
Best tyre I had on my Scooby - not as much grip as an SO2 PPs but much more fun on roundabouts
If they are on about F1 GS-D2 or GS-D3 (IIRC, other versions of the F1 are available), tell the tyre guys to stop talking out of their **** and get some on your car

B0llocks. I drive 'enthusiastically' and have Goodyear Eagle F1s on the P1. 9000 miles on them so far, great tyre and treads absolutely fine. From memory I paid about £140 per corner fitted.

I got my F1's for £96 each (16") at my local one man band tyre fitter. He made me a brew and was dead careful working on the car which is more than you could say for most bigger tyre places.
National Tyres, for example, reckoned that £96 was less than their cost price and so they wouldn't price match.

RE010s were the version that Bridgestone developed for the Impreza as the factory fit tyre. Bridgestone do lots of these specific tyre types for different manufacturers and models.
Generally considered a lower quality tyre and certainly won't have the grip or performance of the Goodyear F1, Toyo T1-s or S02s or S03s. They tend to last quite well as they have a hard compound. You probably wouldn't get quite the same mileage from the S02s or Toyos (for instance) as these tend to use softer compounds that will give you more grip.
No contest really - bin the RE010s and get something decent.

The set of RE010's that came with my car from new lasted 8000 miles and for the last 1000 miles tramlined like buggery.
I replaced them with Toyo Proxies and they lasted 12000, same mix of roads same driving style and no tramlining.
Needless to say I would never go back to 010's.

215/40/17 F1's (GSD3s) are currently £100.50 per corner, fitted and balanced from Micheldever.
However, if you do get tyres from Micheldever, expect that they won't screw the valve inners in properly and at least one tyre will be totally flat within hours of getting home.

Surely Micheldever can't be THAT **** at assembling tyres???? Its what they do all day every day!!!
Try Headley if you want some monkeys playing with your tyres!! They throw your valves at each other, skylarking about with something that could kill you or save your life - a decent set of tyres CORRECTLY fitted!!!

Pete, I got 4 new tyres from there recently and 3 of the valve inners were not screwed in properly. One tyre was totally flat within 3 hours of me getting home.
I know someone else who went to Micheldever for 4 new tyres and left with 30-something psi in one front tyre and 18 psi in the other! Does that sound safe to you?

Cheers for all the info (especially the link from SiPie). So it looks like the F1s are the Impreza drivers tyre choice! Is the GSD3 the best tyre pattern in the F1s?
Dan
Edited to add - I have got about 13k miles from the RE010s, what can I expect from a set of F1s based on that?

Having never used the RE010s I can't really comment but would assume the F1's are a considerably softer compound therefore would wear a bit quicker. However as I mentioned at the end of that thread mine are wearing remarkably well
I was trying to work out why the F1's were wearing so well and all I can think of is that with the increased grip of the F1's I don't slide the car about nearly as much, hence save myself from scrubbing off rubber when driving quickly
No doubt any Tyre experts will probably laugh their ***** off at that theory and baffle me with science but I can't think of any other reason as to why a soft compound tyre should last so well when there has been little change to driving style or conditions
Cheers

Si - I think you're spot on! I got about 15k from my original RE010s but was sliding around a lot and the tramlinining was awful for the last few thousand.
I've got F1s now and have so far done a good 12k on them, still plenty of tread left, with not much sliding. They are excellent tyres. Paid £350 for the 4, all-in fitted.
(16s BTW)

What kind of Bridgestone tyres did they recommend? They make dozens of tyres.

IMHO - Can be difficult to get good unbiased advice on tyres from a fitters sometimes - perhaps you should have asked if they had the Goodyears in stock, bet the answer would be 'no but funnily enough we have the Bridgestones'
Had Potenza 010's on my scoob as standard - generally not very good and tramlined to buggerey towards the end of their lives.
OK but not great. Lasted 18K miles
Changed to F1's - brilliant in the wet, virtuially no difference betwen wet and dry performance, unless the road was greasy, lasted 15K miles of hard mixed driving, had two sets.
Got Bridgestone - 'somethings, cannot remember the number on the Honda - they are onlt average and will swap them for proper tyres, Toyo's or F1's when they wear out.
Had Toyo's on the Puma, not as good as the F1's in the wet, same apart from that.
All IMHO of course
