Upgrading Brakes on an Impreza GX
Hi guys,
I bought a 2001 Impreza GX bugeye, however the brakes were completely shot and I decided to get WRX brakes from the same year.
However as the brake discs and callipers are bigger than the stock ones, the calliper mounting bolts do reach the holes where they go they are a bit further down as the discs are bigger.
I need help in deciding whether to find brackets that can help me mount the new callipers or whether I should replace the brake backing plates to ones from a WRX. Would the brake backing plates fit the stock wheel hub?
Any suggestions and any help pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

According to this link they should bolt straight on.

I'd be surprised if the GX had different hubs, most stuff is interchangeable, are you trying to fit the Subaru branded 4 pot front calipers?

Is this front or rear? Fronts should bolt right up but the rears need some work to fit. You either need adapter brackets and cut the back plate shields to fit the larger disc or you could fit whole new back plates with the correct caliper mount and shield however you also need to replace the bearings at the same time as doing this so it gets rather expensive if you don't already have the parts.

Cutting the plate shields should not be a problem as they are very rusty. Would you recommend using the adapter brackets or replacing both the mounts and the wheel bearings? I would need to buy new bearings and backing plates any idea how much that would cost me?
Many thanks for the prompt reply.

I don't know what rear brake setup the Bug GX used but assuming it's the same single pot caliper and disk setup used on the classic then I assume something like this would work.

Probably worth giving them a call and see what they say.

This is for the rear, I'm sorry I should have specified. All the adapter brackets I find are supposed to be classic impreza to newage impreza brakes, would this adapter kit work for me here?

When I was faced with this decision first time around I went with some single pot brakes off a Classic that were the same diameter but vented so dealt much better with the heat which is what I was having problems with. More recently I had all the parts needed off the WRX I’m rebuilding with different hubs so all I needed to buy were the new bearings which were needed anyway.
Replacing everything is the proper way to do things however you will also need to budget for new ABS sensors as they can easily be damaged being removed, especially if they haven’t been touched since the car was made which is often the case. If you’re doing the work yourself and buying brand new parts, you’re probably looking at around £250 for the back plates and bearings. The long bolt has a horrible habit of seizing in too which can ruin the bushes in the lateral links plus the bolt will need replaced. So if your luck is bad and you could be looking at quite a bill, even worse if you’re paying someone else to do the work.
So assuming your wheel bearings are in good condition, I’d just get the adapter brackets.

Okay cheers, that sums it up pretty well, I am doing the work myself and I think replacing the bearing would be too much of a hassle for now so I'm going to get the brackets for now.
Many thanks!
