try this
check the condition of the brake shoes for wear
if they're ok, adjust the shoes at the rear wheels, so as the shoes are close to the drums but not binding

there is a rubber plug which you'll need to remove to gain access in order to turn the cog to up to tighten, and down to loosen

You'll need a torch and a long thin flat screwdirver to poke in and turn the cog
This is what is inside the hole and the cog you will be trying to turn

you can also adjust the cable inside the car at the handbrake lever

there is a full guide here

Good info above, I recently put new shoes and discs on mine, adjusted them up a treat, still had excessive handbrake reserve travel, so I had to tighten the cables up too, (done inside the car on the lever itself. Handbrake is now amazing.

Cheers ....knew you come to the rescue !, should of ask in the P1 forum , so it a bit like the german cars then ...bit of a bitch to get right without taken the rear disc off to adjust as you cant really see what your doing .

all my cars need servicing at the mom, just done the daily hack that I bought of Ebay last week , major service plus changing the rear shocks and will replace the front brake disc/pads next week (hopefully),
need to replace a faulty throttle actuator on my M3 as well and a oil service , my wife 116i need it annual oil service now and the 944 is still waiting for me to work on it lol .

passion for cars is getting me over worked !!

The P1 is going into Cotton.com for some fuelling issues(running rich ) next month as well !!

Glad to see you getting stuck in and not shelling out money to dealers or garages for jobs you can easily DIY, remember to double check everything after you've finished

yes , but when your under the car with 10 years of road dirts going into your eyes and nuts/bolts that refuse to loosen and limited space to work on the suspension .....it times like this that you wish you had use the garage service , but all is forgotten when you fit the parts and the car drives like new

Once you've got the brakes sorted, take it for a test drive due North for 400 miles
see you in 5 hours
