This morning I found my car was missing a dust cap. Just had new wheels and rubber, so the valve is still nice and shiny. I'm 99% sure it went missing last night, after I got in at around 1am.

This got me thinking (paranoid?). The only reason I can think of for just one of the caps to be missing - and it took me a while to come up with this - is: could someone be after my wheels. Has anyone heard of a potential thief letting the air out of one wheel to check for the presence of a tilt sensor? As far as I can see, the pressure is fine, but this is my current theory.

Any advice?

Sure it wasn't a kid wanting a new dust cap for his bike?

Has been known to happen around here

Annoying more than anything else.

I used to have chrome dust caps on my supra and they were always getting nicked by the local kids, IMHO I think a thief would just lift you car from the wheel arch to test for a tilt sensor

Way toooooooo paranoid

Maybe I'm wrong but I dont think your average tea leaf would be as sophisticated as this - to let air out to test your tilt sensor - most likely kids

Probably not kids since i) got in at 1am, no kids about, ii) kids around here are not into nicking bits off cars. Also, they're just the regular plastic caps, not fancy ones. I've since added another set of locking nuts, completely different type to OE. Glad to say you're all probably right - too para - no such worries since. Was prob just coincidence that it happened the day after getting new wheels.

Thanks for replies guys.
