If it's anything like my bug you'll need to remove the rear seats and the centre 3-point seat belt. Once that's done the plastic shelf should only be held on by some pop clips but they are meaty ones and need a bit of persuasion.

Are you on about the parcel shelf cover which pops out or the metal bit underneath it?

The cover comes out if you remove the rear seats, the other part doesn't.

The shelves are fitted to the car, you can't remove, you need to take the speakers out from the Boot. Then cut the metal to allow a larger speaker, just get some decent door speakers and a little sub, then you have no need to mess about with it

Are standard speakers bolted in from the top? Every Impreza I've worked on and installed speakers already had the OEM ones removed so I don't know, I always bolt new speakers in from underneath the shelf by laying in the boot.

If they are bolted from the top it's rear seats out and shelf off.

dead easy mate, rear seats come out in 5 minutes and the shelf lifts out in seconds, just bend it carefully upwards in the center and wiggle the ends out, be careful not to snap it. You can get the shelf out in 10 minutes from start to finish

A spanner will do it, it's just slower. The bolts are the bottom near the seat belts and it's hooked in at the top so you lift it off of the hooks at either end

DONE IT just took rear bench out easy the 3 12 mm bolts out then the rest is just push up and un hook no bolts i pulled the seat back and managed to get enough room to access speakers the worst part was lifting the parcel shelf itself you could tell it had been there un touched for 13-14 years and after all that my speakers didnt fit by BOUT HALF INCH LOL oh well you learn something every day !!! ive never had so much hassle trying change a simple speaker!! i took them out any way so i can match them to some new ones ........my day off well spent hahhaahh thanks alot paulo for pointing me in the rite direction much love x
