Default WRX 2.5

First of all i'd like to say Hi to all you scooby members.

Currently i drive my cheap runaround. It's a 58 plate 1.2 Punto 8v... Purchased as i'm a tight sod and don't like paying for Tax, Insurance and fuel

However, my missus now wants kids which i've got out of for next couple of years. I'm after one last blow out and always wanted a Subrau.

What are people opinions on the WRX 2.5? I'm looking at spending around 9 - 10k on the car in the next couple of months when i've shifted the Punto and saved a bit more cash. Really like style of the 54/05 plate WRX.

As nice as they are you'll always end up wanting an STI. A blobeye STi can be had for the same money and if you search you'll get the cheaper Tax version as well.

Hi

Depends what your after..

The WRX is a lovely car and a lot more livable with day to day. Plenty fast enough.

The STI is the more severe version.. Yes its faster but its also a little more thirsty, a harder rider and with higher running costs.

Both are excellent cars but you need to test drive both and make your own mind up.

I've got a 2.5 WRX and it's a great car, as others have said it is not as quick as the STi but it's certainly a lot quicker than a 1.2 punto.

The 2.5 engine was only fitted to the last of the saloons - The Hawkeyes, these are late 55 plate onwards.

The previous model is the blob eye and these were fitted with a 2.0 unit.

A 2.5 PPP will be just as fast as a standard STi though not as tuneable.

I would go for the Sti, but it's worth mentioning that we are talking about the 2.5 rather than the 2.0WRX (which I currently have). The 2.5 is nice 'n' torquey, making it a good road car.

An early 06 WRX will be in the lower tax bracket, IIRC its pre Apr06, mine was march 06 so I was lucky.

I had an 06 WRX and loved it, bought it as a family car and it was spot on, agree the STI is better in pretty much every way but for a reaonably sensible family motor it was perfect with lower running costs than the STI, and as said above it was pretty quick.

Its a good introduction to Subaru ownership, go for an STI next time like I did!!

A 2.5 WRX with a few subtle mods like a remap etc and you have a fantastic car with huge torque. I love mine and would certainly not want to swap it for say a Blob 2.0 STI

Why not get a wrx wagon and then there's plenty of room for pushchairs etc when the kids come along

I agree another wrx owner and very pleased with my car, it was a great introduction to performance cars with a re map and a few tweaks it would have no issues keeping up with a sti but also staying a great motorway car (feel like a auto so much low down power you don’t really need to change down).

I love my car so much i couldn’t come round to selling it so i am spending more than it cost brand new on a full custom build making it a real STI eater.

i had wrx first but blobeye 2.0 with ppp mods is a good fast family car. Is more than good enough to most people and cheaper to buy and run than an sti. The 2.5 with a good remap will be even better. But on a site full of enthusiasts you will always be advised to go sti and remap mod etc. But a lot of people will be more than happy with a std wrx. An sti is a better car but is not always the best choice for everyone. I went jdm sti and as good as the car is its not the choice of everyone. Go test drive a wrx and see if it suits you.
