Yep, they do this to "protect" the local automotive manufacturing jobs (the likes of Mercedes, VW, Nissan and quite a few others have factories in South Africa). The deal is supposed to mean that locally manufactured cars can be supplied cheaply, but this is not the case ... the manufacturers have used the excessive tax and import duties on imported cars (approx 60%) to allow them to charge higher prices on locally manufactured vehicles too.

You do get some estates, but South African's much prefer "bakkies" or small open back trucks (like the Australian Ute) if you want a hard working vehicle.

Impreza prices in S.A. are totally out of sync when compared with some other manufacturers and the cost of living in general.
My pal there has a detached ranch style home in Joburg with massive gardens, swimming pool etc that is on the market for £120k. A pint of lager costs £1.30 and you can get an 8oz fillet steak plus trimmings for £8. A VW Golf GTi which costs the around the same price as an Sti hatch in the UK is £16k cheaper than the Sti in S.A.
