Default 3rd time time within a year!!!!!!!

Yes- i know the photo is crap but you get the general gist that it's my99 classic turbo arriving at my house on the back of an AA recovery truck! (at bloody midnight last night!!)

There i am driving down a nice grid road in M.k and the car just dies, pull over and start her back up, misfireing and spluttering with the engine management light on- yes of course another air flow meter is Fecked.

When i first bought the car back in august last year it needed a new one as the car didn't idle properly (but drove fine). So i rang subaru and they wanted about £270 for one Was a bit short of funds after my purchase so decided to buy a patented part for £95
This air flow meter lasted all of about 2 months before it packed up! so rang the company up and they sent me a replacement.
Now 4 months after fitting this one its also gone ****-up

The thing is with these cheaper ones (when their broke) is that the car idles fine but as soon as you go to pull away it splutters and mis-fires.

Now the original is different as it idles bloody horribly but drives spot on (so ive had to put this one back on until i can track down another air flow meter!)
Do you think this could damage my car in anyway as it might be on for a week or so? like i say when im stopped the revs die down to what seems like 200 revs and then quickly shoots up 1500revs then back down agin and so on! But normal driving is fine (plus the CHECK ENGINE light is not on with one)

Any thoughts or similar experiences????

That is at a main dealer. All you need is the sensor. They must be charging you for a new unit including the housing.

Hows your lambda sensor? A duff one (as far as I can remember) will keep on screwing up the maf sensor.
As somebody previously said, a maf sensor for a MY99 uk turbo is only around £90 from the main dealer. You don't want the complete tube, just a new element.
Take it to a specialist and get it sorted asap.

Did you take it to a main dealer for that price?

maf on 99/00 is very weak, almost to the point where its a service replacement part like oil filter. The specialist where I take mine keeps them in stock and sticks every 99/00 on the ecutek for diagnostics as a matter of course when it comes in.

You only need the sensor itself, subaru will try and sell you the entire housing unit as well so make sure you specifically ask for the sensor only. Most subaru specialists will stock them - about 70quid for.

Make sure you have no water in the air filter which has got in through a crack in the intake pipework as that wont help.

I havent got a 99/00 myself but was going to buy one and everyone I spoke to told me about the maf as a regular occuring issue.

As black V5 says, they're trying to charge you for the whole housing. You only need the sensor.
