Not sure if this will be much more helpful than pslewis.... but - The instructions which came with mine explained that you set it to its most sensitive setting (think there's a plastic/screw/dial thing on the back?) and then wind it down so that you only have mild green flicker when driving gently around - so that it onyl lights up when you're hammering it (and you get knocking).

Not sure how relevant the above is if car is modded and you're unsure whether you have det as a result. Maybe best off talking to a mapper like Bob Rawle as he opperates from Swindon and Richmond (so a triangle for you if you're in Southampton I think) - as he could listen with det-cans (headphones) for knocking and help adjust the Knocklink accordingly - I seem to recall he mentioned that he helped design it with Link?

This is similar to what a few people are saying, put it up to max sensitivity.

Ditto. I'd set it to max. Anything above Greens -which denote background noise, to be expected when giving the car some beans- and you should have a word with your mapper, as something may be amiss. Increased knock activity may be a very good early warning of a failing MAF (common on my99/00)

Set it to max, you may get a bit of backbground noise up the top end but anything flashing orange or red is a problem.
