Default Any tips on selling a private plate?

I have a private which i want to sell, I contacted regTransfers who have offered me £600 as soon as it sells if they advertise it for me. What is the best way to get the most money for it.

would it be sell it private or phone up all the companys and get the highest quote

Thanks Alex

Ebay is probs your best bet- as mentioned- I've never had any luck with any of the registration sales companies.

Sold a very similar plate on Ebay recently ( J7 NAJ ) - ended on £36 !

I've been 'offered' £1500 for my plate by regtransfers - what that means is they will list it as available on their website ( costs them nothing ) and IF someone buys it, then they'll take a commission and give me the rest.

They have got a very similar plate to mine ( one number difference ), that spells the same word for £2500.

The plate means nothing to me, it wason a car I bourght, the initials were the specific to the owner, £600 would be ok but i suppose it could take agaes to sell through reg transfers. are there any companies that would buy the plate themselfs then sell it on, instead of the other way round lol

Not sure about that. Most reg dealers buy on SOR and sell it for you taking comission when it sells. The best bet is the advertise it yourself or stick it on ebay. While Regtransfers may say £600, that is only the price they think it is worth and not necessarily what it will sell for. I had my own plate valued by regtransfers at close on £2k when in reality it cost less than half the price!

please dont take this the wrong way but if you get £50 for it you have done well. It spells nothing and means nothing. The chances of someone with the initials JLO wanting a plate and finding yours is miniscule. All you have is a plate with only one number in it and there are thousands of them out there NOT being called private plates...... sorry mate.

fair comment, but there is a plate for everyone. people make what they want out of them. Initials being a prime example.

Yeah, but I can go on DVLA now and have the choice of thousands of plates with my initials on, or with WRC, BHP etc on and they aren't private plates and are available for £250 (eg T333 BHP)

or for £399

B1 JLO
B7 JLO
C7 JLO
etc etc

Go here http://www.dvla-som.co.uk/home/en/Search/p/prefix and then tell us why it's worth so much.

Hate to be the one to shatter your dreams mate but you will never get anywhere near what regtransfers reckon plates are worth. I have a plate on there at the moment valued at 1095. i have to take it off though as i sold it with a car worth 1k for 1k!! they never seem to shift plates and they seriously overvalue them. If you get a hundred for the plate count yourself lucky. Good luck with selling anyway though!

yea I see your piont, although reg transfers offerd me 600, its unlikely thats the ammount i would recieve. I was thinking if they value it at 600, then its surely worth more than that private or after calling more companys.

Ideally I want to swap it for a cheap private plate that is specific to me. LOL-what about a swap for a number i liked with a company, that would be easy (in therory)

Agree that these new DVLA plates arent 'private plates' at all - all the decent ones that very obviously spell words or names ( e.g. P1LOT, M1 KEY etc... ) are sold at the DVLA auctions and not on the website.

A 'proper' private plate would be something like 1 MF or MF 9 - and these generally cost a few thousand.

Half these plates people have bought with their initials on, you cant even tell if its a personal plate or the original one from the car.
