France is a big country for us to know where you are actually coming from fella?

Just look out for national speed limit signs with a line through them

Be a shame to blow your car up before you actually get to the ring though

LOL you'll know once you hit one. I can't even remember the names of them but I've been a couple of times and IIRC just over the Belgian border you've got a decent long stretch. As soon as you see a Merc SL come up behind you with its lights on full at 150mph, that's your cue.

But as someone else pointed out, would be a shame to blow up your Scoob before you got there. Save your petrol money to pay the 180 Euros (or whatever I paid last time) for half a lap of the 'Ring on the back of a recovery truck.

im driving to dover and then once i get the ferry to calais ill be driving along the top of france and into belgium then into germany. isnt the ring only 100 miles into germany?
on that 100 or so miles are there any unrestricted autobahns?
Im hoping my car wont blow up its a standard 2001 x plate impreza with 39000 miles on and it seems to be running strong surely it would blow up would it?
Hopefully going over there middle of August

AFAI recall, there are no unrestricted autobahn's on that route.

And bear in mind the belgian police can confiscate your car if you are speeding excessively.

I generally go with the flow of traffic, crusing just under a ton, with the occasional blip on top of that..

any unrestricted autobahns near there or near the ring. Also im not really a motorway racer i generally stick ish to speed limits but does the impreza not take too kindly to prolonged 100mph+ speeds.

When you get close the the ring DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO SPEED, I got caught by speeding camera in parked up motor doing 10kmh over and then 5k down the road they nicked all my beer money

Joking aside they are **** hot on speeding on those lovely roads near the ring

As tempting as it may be, try not to go above 100mph as the fines can be heavy. save the money to pay for more fuel and laps, its more fun than any motorway

Well maybe I was a naughty boy then, but as far as I can remember from the autobahn coming in via the 'northern route' (a little bit of France, most of Belgium then into Germany towards Cologne, then turn South) was unrestricted or at least parts of it were. I'm sure I remember seeing signs that showed a restricted speed, at which time our convoy slowed down, and the rest of the time it was fairly long stretches of 130-145 mph (NOT in Scoobies BTW) And stopping for petrol every hour LOL

The roads around the Eiffel mountains once you get closer to the 'Ring are too lovely to speed around. Just take it easy and enjoy the view. I'm gutted I'm not going this year.

Yeah im gunna take it easy anyway because its gunna be a 8 or 9 hour journey from Lincolnshire so ill just take it easy-ish unless i see unrestricted motorway signs. how long does it take from calais to Nurburg? ish.
cheers

The speed limits are mostly 70k, 120k and unrestricted. The police are not to bad with speeding unless you kick the ar$e out of it and become a danger to other road users. The best rule of thumb is to go with the flow unless there is no limit. Just beware though that the Germans drive differently to us and dont always check their mirrors for cars motoring on up the outside (blue scoobys!) before pulling out. If you're flying along, make sure you're giving 100% attention to your surroundings.

Oh, and make sure your windows are up before thinking of 150+ or you'll need to slow down again to close them.

Yes 'go with the flow' is a good rule. If everyone's caning it, then you can as well. If they're taking it easy, do the same. As someone else mentioned the rules of the road are slightly different over there and I've seen a few crazy manouevers over there that you wouldn't dream of seeing in the UK- e.g. Merc limos overtaking on the hard shoulder at well over 100mph when the other lanes were full. If someone flashes you, they're not letting you pull out, they're telling you to keep out of the way cos they're coming through LOL
