Hi and welcome. Your fella has good taste! Ive got a 96 wrx and the fuel economy is bad but not awful. Its no worse than my old FTO gpx.
My turbo kicks in at about 2500\3000 (I think - normally too busy grinning!!)
Tell your fella to look around and hell find a good one.
Cheers,
Feffers

Hi & Welcome!
Re. fuel consumption - totally depends how u drive it but hey, u don't buy a Scooby & then drive around like ur in a Mini Metro do ya???
Around town it can b pretty gas-guzzling but if ur a bit tight on pennies one week, let the little ***** with the baked-bean tin exhausts burn u off at the lights a few times (pretend u can't see 'em!) & u'll probably make it thru 2 the end of the week without going bankrupt!!!
As already stated tho, bottom line is...
If u wanna play, u gotta pay...But u've only got 1 life & what else u gonna spend ur money on???

When I first had mine, I did 15mpg. So I tried taking it easy and got 18mpg. So now I drive how I bloody well like as it doesn't make a lot of difference. Thats mainly around town, the best I have ever had was 24mpg and that was a combination of motorway and A-roads.
Mine is an M-reg WRX fully de-catted btw.
Also mine begins to spool up around 2k but the real shove is from 2.5k onwards.
