Question

First one. I have a 94 WRX, can anyone tell me is this a dump valve?. The car is supposed to have one fitted and I swear it makes that hiss noise but only when thrashing it. Just curious as its going in for a service soon and will get them to look at it as its under warrnanty.

Secondly how come on some models the bonnet scoop feeds both the intercooler and the turbo as on mine. Yet on some models it doesnt particualry later models. Is this due to the size of the turbo?. Read somewhere the earlier models have a bigger turbo.

Cheers Dave

1. I don't think thats a dumpvalve.

2. On the later models it's still the same, just not with the chimney type thing.

Air in here,

Through here,

and onto here,

As Brun said, its just for directing cool air onto the turbo, from the bonnet scoop.

oh well, be time to get a dump valve fitted at the next service. Other than the nice noise whats the benefits. I only know that they reduce lag dont they?.

They make the car run richer if thats what you want to do. Personally I would stuck with a recirculation type rather than VTA, then again with short gearing whats turbo lag

Oh well come to the decision that a dumpo valve is going on at the next service. At the minute it doesnt seem to have a lot of lag but anything to make it a bit better.
I will try the recircualtion type, are they a bit more expensive?.

Hi to red scooby widdow too.

The recirculation type is what you have on now as standard. Its recirculates the air back into the system when you change gear and under boost. A VTA (vent to atmosphere) as the name suggests releases the air into the atmosphere and you get that loud whoosh sound. There are both dump valves just go about it two different ways.

There are various trains of thought

VTA - make the car run richer and in some cases have screwed up the fueling and idling on some cars but, other people have no problems at all. It will not give you anymore horsepower that is for certain. I honestly think 99.9% of people fit them for the noise. Very expensive whooshing noises .
