Dirty Dirty

My engine bay is really dirty, it allways was a bit gruby.
What is best for getting it looking like new again.
One of these steam cleaning places?
Do they not damage bits and strip paint?

Have a chat with Mark Underwood (Wax Wizard). He does a very good engine cleaner that will sort out the engine bay no problemm. He will also the explain the process for applying, letting the engine warm up properly and then using a pressure washer to clean up the engine. It works very well. Pictures below are from my old Scoob. This engine had a years worth of dirt and grime on it before Mark started. At the end, it looked better than the day it left the showroom:

Try "Gunk" available everywere, tried and tested over many years and not expensive. Apply with a paintbrush, (agitate over stubben heavily soiled areas) cover alternater, and sensitive electrics with plastic bags. Leave for 5 mins then wash off with clean water or jet spray. Excellent product, works where others don`t.

Don’t steam clean it and don’t go mad holding a jet wash to close for too long. Clean the cosmetic bits that you can see from the top of the engine, after all this is why you want to clean it. Leave the rest of it well alone, sometimes it really is the dirt holding it all together trust me.
Cheers,
Ian.

Word of warning, if you do clean the engine off, PLEASE make sure the alloy stuff gets re waxed or treated, otherwise, it will look pretty till the first appearence of water spray, then you hit problems with alloy corrosion and you will never get rid of that at all. would not suggest a quick spray with "engine laquer" as it is not thick enough to coat all the surfaces and it peels off easier than the dirt you are getting rid of.

I should be on comission for this guy
Mark is based down in the Portsmouth area, but he will normally come out to anywhere in the UK for a price. Mark will give you all the details. He can also just supply the products if you want.

Incidently, Mark makes a big point of removing all the green crap that you often see on Scoob engines - this is just Cosmoline (I think that is the spelling) and the entire car is covered in it when they are shipped from Japan for protection during the voyage. You don't want to even know how they get it off when they arrive in the UK

I have every faith in Marks products, in fact I`ve just spent over £160 with him. However I used the cleaner as instructed for the engine bay, it did not remove the cosmoline!. I tried spraying again with the cleaner but it still left a film especially on the hoses. I have used Gunk before with great results so I decided to try that again. It worked perfectly and removed all the coating that Marks product could not. I then coated the engine bay with Marks protector, the result, i`ll lay money on that no one can better. Sorry Mark but for this purpose Gunk is the only product that I know that beats yours.

Velcro pete, The green stuff is cosmoline it`s a anti corrosive that is sprayed all over the engine bay by the manufacturer, read Chris`s and my comments on this thread!.
Trouble is it`s a B****** to remove. As I said Mark`s products are excellent and the cleaner removed most of the cosmoline but on the hoses it left a deposit which just smeared. The rest of the engine bay looked just like Chris`s. I then tried Gunk. That removed all traces left on the hoses. Sprayed with Marks protector, result amazing as the pictures above (thanks to Chris) shows.
However Gunk proved better for removing the slime.
