Evo and Car.

Evo is more performance orientated, used to live round the corner from their offices. Met Peter Tomalin down there once, real enthusiast just like the rest of us.

Car is more generic, but I've been reading Car since I was able to read (even have issues from the year I was born!) and it's a hard habit to give up.

Evo, without doubt, is IMHO the best driver-focused magazine out there. Not particularly Scoob-related, but a tip-top read. The only thing I read from cover to cover every month.

Banzai and Japanese performance are both directed at Japanese performance cars and have some interesting stuff in them, but I no longer bother with 'em.

Don't think so, but those Banzai mags are funny. And who was it that said Max Power? GET OUT!
Sorry, just think that Max Power and Fast Car pander too much to the "all i want is t1ts and a 'fully slammed chariot' rolling on 'dubs' with some phat ICE and Nos under the hood" brigade.
Rant over.

Probably get flamed for this, but there was a time when Max Power was a decent magazine, circa 94 I think, I got bored of it when:

Every issue had to feature a Nova, Golf, or Escort. (originality lacking)

Every page had to feature breasts, I'm *not* 14, I *do* have a girlfriend, and if I wanted naked ladies I would buy a magazine that catered for that market.

Also, I used to be into some pretty serious stereo builds, and there was a time when people spent time and effort doing this. Most of the setups became "one flat panel of MDF" or "stereo built by xxx ice of wherever" I'm sorry but it takes no talent to give your car to a stereo shop with a cheque.

Good to see that someone else shares my point of view. i too remember that 'in the good ol' days' it was a good mag. I mean, how can any mag seriously feature a Renault 5 Gt Turbo that cost someone £5000, then they spent a further £32,000 on!!!!!
Its sheer bl00dy madness!
Then it was up for sale for £25,000. As if, what a total loser.

I agree with you all, but sadly Max Power is the UK's best selling "car" magazine, by quite a large margin.

Sad world we live in.

I totally agree as well. I mean Renault 5's etc do have there limited uses as pocket rockets when you are on a limited budget. In my younger days I used to own a Fiat Uno turbo. I spent £15 quid on a bleed valve, turned up the boost and drove it untill something went bang, which it did very often but it was ok as they were relatively cheap to fix.

However buying a shed and then spending £30,000 on it!!?? I mean what's the point. Why not just buy a decent car for £20,000 and spend £10,000 on making that better than any Renualt 5. The amount of times I have had a Reanult 5\Nova\Fiat Uno driver try to tell me that his car is better than mine cos he is running 30psi is unbelievable. The amount of times I see broken down pocket rockets cos there 1.nothing engine gave up the ghost trying to run 30 psi is unbeleivable and I don't even want to meantion things like handling, corners, torque steer, ride quality etc. For that reason Max Power maq which I loved 7-8 years ago now seesm s**t. Stick to Evo magazine and for Jap cars Banzai as they usually feature some amazingly modded Jap motors.

I tend to read Evo magazine as it's quite well written and is aimed at the enthusiast. I sometimes read Autocar while waiting for the next issue of Evo, but it isn't as good.
If I came back from the papershop with a copy of Max Power, our lass would probably slap me !

Hmmm, anyone want to go into producing some kind of mag for scoob-group??

i mean, it may be possible to put together an addition to this website, in a sense, an online mag, with sponsors?

Ideas people??

Daz, true, Sub magazine is an edition of Gilles Stievenart (rally driver) who also does Compte Tours and a few others.

Small world: he is also the father of the bloke with the flipped Evo7 (see various threads about that) And a close lady friend of his who takes the pictures for a lot of the mags was co driver with François Delecour on a few Paris Dakar trips. He has his own circuit (Abbeville) and I'm jealous

Personally, I enjoyed Evo very much until the "look how cool we are with this car full of Evoness in the French mountains" started to ennoy me.

I'm still a subscriber to CAR though, and I think it's quite good.
