Sounds like shock knock; does it do it moving off, or coming to a stop?

Not sure of car but some are known to have shock knock, or top mount knock,
If it happens under load and hard accelerating then it would be another area to check.

check the rear arb links , they are often under tension so appear to have no play in them , un do the shock from the hub then move the hub around and see if you have any strange noises , second thing the sti not sure if wrx are the same , have a shock within a tube , the grease dries out instead of the shock moving freely it sticks and then releases and sounds like a bump , a common fault more noticeable at slow speeds

the links that join the rear anti roll bar to the hubs where your wheels bolt to , a flexible joint at either end joined to each other by a metal rod , don’t cost very much , brake pads moving in callipers can sometimes be heard

Hi all, just an update and more help please , so what i thought was a knock from the rear is in fact not, when i take the car out of gear and roll it slowly backwards down a slight slope i can hear a sort of grinding, it does actually feel like its vibrating through the car, not loud but enough to hear it, i thought of maybe a rear UJ is this feasible, Thanks for your help,

hand brake or brake pads , or a brake disc cover/protector, the rear pads best way is take the wheel off to check

or take it for a drive , lightly apply the handbrake when moving and see if you hear the noise , plus lightly apply the brakes when moving , it sounds more of a rubbing issue from what you have explained

Agreed, I get a small clonk from the rear as I pull away after braking sometimes, and doesn't do it if I roll to a stop then pull away. It's the pad movement in the rear calipers, bit annoying and was worried at first what was happening. Harmless enough though. Apparently sometimes this can happen on the front pads too, but I've never had that myself, only the rears.

You can lube up the top and bottom edges of the pads which helps a bit, but not for long I've always found. I can't really think of a permanent solution to solve it.
I've tried copper brake grease and plasti-lube, neither help for long once the pads re-settle it seems.

you can buy sticky pads for the backs of the pads where it meets the pistons , this may help
