Default Forester sti sports cat

Ok so slight dilemma time , sports cat a bit more turbo noise and slightly more power, i’m fine with that based on it not being too much , hayward and scott want 650£ ish for one i’m sure it’s well made , japspeed want 250£ or so for the same thing which has decent reviews , i’m not going to pay 650£ v the benefit you get for it , but 250£ is ok , does any one know if the classic sports cat fits the 2005 fsti as i don’t believe the new age sorts cat does , i don’t want to decat due to mot issues as i know the place i use will not pass it

I believe both the newage and classic downpipes will both fit the FSTI but then you just need to pick the correct mid section or 2nd decat pipe to make it the right length overall.

With my 2004 FSTI I purchased a newage Prodrive sports cat downpipe from MattyB which included the 2nd decat pipe bolted on. The whole thing cost me £150 second hand and it was in great condition. I have seen these rust so check the condition when buying. So the first part obviously bolted up to my turbo just fine, but before Andrew Carr mapped the car I had to get Pole Position to shorten the 2nd decat pipe to mate with my FSTI centre section.

The other option would have been to get a newage centre pipe which is already 4" shorter than the FSTI one and then the whole thing would probably have just bolted up to the back box. Generally speaking it's only the rear box that is 4" longer on the FSTI compared to the Impreza, so everything forward of the back box joint should really interchange.

As far as quality goes, you GENERALLY know what your're getting with Hayward & Scott systems, but I have seen a few issues in the past as with most things. I never rated the Japspeed downpipes as they just seemed too cheap and have the lower 100 CEL cats fitted which are always borderline on MOT's. However my MY15 currently has a Japspeed downpipe fitted temporarily as I haven't got round to fitting the hand built one I have. The full decat downpipe on my car seems just fine currently.

On my 06 WRX I went for a Cobra 200 CEL sports cat downpipe which should have been fine and should fly through MOT's. The downpipe wasn't made right and Richard @ FB Tuning had to pie cut and weld it to get it to mate to the system correctly. It was brand new! Then 2-3 years into it's life it started to fail emissions tests on the MOT. Subaru garage told me it was trashed and needed throwing away and after a week of me telling them to change my pre-cat lambda in the headers they finally did and it flew through the MOT again. So the Cobra one turned out ok too.

It's up to you really. Take a change on the Japspeed downpipe and be prepared to get it hot for the MOT, or pay a LOT more and go for the H&S one with 200 cel cat. Or go decat and find a friendly garage.

Hi Bpr , cheers for the advice , ideally h and s but it’s a lot of £ for a minimal benefit , i heard the classic pipe was a better fit , i am not sure on 02 sensor hole locations , i will have to ponder , i’m thinking of a third lol fsti as the mrs has a hip issue and they said her mx5 has to go due to climbing in and out of it plus driving piston , cheers again 😁

Yes I remember there being something about the O2 sensor location too.

Don (King of parts) will probably be able to tell you the differences in O2 location.

A 3rd FSTI? You greedy b4stard!

You have a great taste Vxr2010, looking forward to seeing a pic of all your FSTis!
I've used a 2005 Impreza STi Prodrive sports cat (which comes with the second cat removed) and a H&S Forester specific middle section in mine.
The only 'downside' is that the steering knuckle could occasionally touch the downpipe at tight (left IIRC) bends taken at speed (noticed on track).

thank you , this is the 07 plate one , i have a silver one too that the mrs now has , i am still thinking sports cat plus a map soon after , see how the funds go , from the sports cat side it is the noise that appeals more , off the line it is very minimal ,sports cat fsti v non sports cat fsti , the fsti with the cat and 310bhp v the sti jdm wagon it destroyed the wagon with 345 bhp off the lights with ease lol 😁

well i went with a classic japspeed one as it was only 159£ delivered it’s a 200 cell one , i believe it should fit ok fingers crossed , it has the correct o2 sensor hole , some times they can catch on the steering universal joint but i will cross that bridge when i get there , the reviews seemed ok for it . i also got a bolt in adaptor plate so i can use the current down pipe doughnut gasket , i will take it for a remap sometime next week , from what Richard said at FB tuning it’s little more bhp but main benefit appears to be better flow , the fsti has little lag any way , it had already been mapped which i did not realise it was an ecutek one but was over fuelling , current map is much better , Richard as in both cars is a good place to get a good map done , there’s a lot of difference in the map from one he’s mapped v one some one else did

I'd be interested if the japspeed classic sports cat downpipe fits, fingers crossed it will.
Let us know how you get on.

well it’s arrived not fitted it yet , ive compared it to my spare old shape fsti one standard cat i have , it looks the same length , sensor wise there are two holes one by the turbo the other the same place as the standard subaru cat , it’s a 200 cell one , it looks well made a very good price , the fsti down pipe i assume is the same on an old and new shape , all i have done exhaust wise so far is replace the centre pipe which is now a straight threw pipe , the standard centre pipe had a cat then a silencer , the other part i bought was a mishimoto adaptor so i can still use the standard doughnut washer/gasket on the down pipe , i don’t think it will make a lot of performance difference but with hind site cheaper to do it first time , car had already been mapped by ecutek but was not a very good map as boost was low plus over fuelling , i will update when fitted and mapped

Well got it done in the end , the pipe itself had an extra bracket on it at the top that was cut off , the lower bracket that bolts to the gearbox lined up , i still have a slightly modded version of the flexible doughnut in place , the bell mouth? (the bit that bolts to the turbo ? ) had to be modified🔨 as it was catching on the steering rack universal joint but that was pretty easy to do , took it for a run it drives fine , possibly a little more instant , re re map booked in for this coming thursday , it did take quite a few hours to do as i met a few issue the turbo heat shield was modified and cut to shape plus the exhaust was on off a few times so i knew what part to modify 🔨 the doughnut bush i felt it was important to have some flex in the system or things crack , not bad for 159£ for the 200 cell sports cat , the doughnut adaptor was 45£ or so , both items on ebay , no boost spikes or issues when i drove it , but still getting the map checked/adjusted , it’s that big question do you have to remap after fitting a sports cat ? i think worth doing for a few extra horses plus peace of mind

Yes, definitely worth a remap after changing to a sports cat. Should see better flow and may even be able to gain a little timing and power increase.
