Default Silly Petrol Question

Hi Guys

Finally got my STI, picking it up Saturday. Silly question is this, I know the STI needs 97RON fuel but will 99RON Tesco Momentum be ok or do I have to stick to 97RON and nothing else, the STI is a UK car.

Thanks guys.

What year? 2.0 or 2.5?

My 2.5 STi loves V-Power from Shell (99RON), never put anything else in it.

Not sure on 2.0 STi's

Its a 2006 2.5l

I will try both fuels and see if I and tell the difference, both Tesco and Shell are the same distance from my home so that isn't an issue.

Tesco is my favourite, like rocket fuel.

It will run fine on standard super, because the knock link will retard the ignition a few points where it needs to, hence why JDM's can run on 99, when Jap fuel is 102, you get a few points of retardation...does lose power though using lower grad, and with that 2.5 already being a bomb waiting to go off, treat it to the finest of everything, and never drive it , this way, it wont melt

From what I've read the 2.5 is fine, you only encounter problems when you start to exceed the BHP limits of what the engine was designed for. So unless you start tuning it the 2.5 unit it pretty solid.

i got my 2.0 mapped to Shell V-power. NOS included.

however sometime i`m lazy and fill up from Tesco 99, and for whatever reason, everytime I use Tesco's petrol, I get less average Knock level and even less injector duty. (using apexi to display these values).

I would say you can't go wrong with any of these 2 petrols.

+ higher octane should translate in less chance of detonation, hence if you are mapped for example for a 95, and you put in a 103 octane petrol, you sould be fine. This is what I believe, maybe someone needs to correct me.

I agree with this.
Not sure why people seem to think their car runs differently, both the same octane.
Plus, tesco use fuel made by esso... And if you look deep into it im pretty sure esso and shell are both owned by the same people... Correct me if in wrong though.
I do know my shell work fuel card can be used at a shell, esso, or tesco...

Also, to the OP, you can use any fuel. Just dont use lower octane fuel than the car is mapped to. If the car is on the standard subaru UK map then you can use any UK fuel, but if its mapped to say 99ron then dont fill up with normal 95ron.

Tesco Momentum for me every time. I only run on Shell vPower if I can't get to a Tesco filling station. I definitely seem to get slightly more MPG using Tesco Momentum than I do using Shell vPower and the car seems to perform better.

Nope, here's a thread on my standard FSSH (up to me buying last August) Hatch STi, complete with pics of the 2 knackered pistons that have just been removed. It's currently at Subaru for You having a new short block with forged pistons fitted.

Have a thorough read through this thread where you will get honest opinions of those people who have suffered engine failures and those of well respected engine tuners / builders too:

Hi Alcazar

Tesco Momentum has methanol added to help achieve 99. It used to be 5% but now I notice it is 3% which brings it closer to Shell in terms of energy density but I'm not sure they can come from the same tank.

I see your point regarding the failures, well, it's too late now so will have to wait and see, better start saving in case the worst does happen

I used to run my WRX on Sainsburys Super and it never missed a beat.

My STi has only ever been ran on V-Power, even got the iphone app for when I'm away to find the nearest Shell garage.

Shell every time.

Recently my, yellow light came on 50 miles from home and my local Shell station. I pulled into the nearest motorway services and put in 15 litres of BP Ultimate (?) for a quick splash and dash home.

What a mistake! Cue stuttering, hesitation and roughness all the way home.
It took a whole tankful of V-Power plus numerous 'diluting' top-ups before the car ran right again.

Never again.

Shell V-Power is just the cream!
