Evening chaps. Pretty sure the answer may be somewhere within the last 56 pages but it's Sunday night and I'm tired.

So the issue with the 2.5 engines, is this purely the 2008 - 2010 models? What about the older hawk eyed ones? 2007? Specifically the STI's I'm interested in.

Thanks

Think the 2.5ltr engines since 2006 have been relatively similar - ej257?
I know there were a few rb320's that failed due to piston ringland/hg. And I thought that was pretty much a slightly tuned hawkeye.
Most of the failures as far as I'm aware have been on cars with aftermarket mods - juries still out on failure rates.

I'd wait for a more informed opinion rather than take mine though if I was you.

As an engine builder I only see broken ones, so its not a full picture of course, but what I can say with 100% confidence is that std 2.5 WRX's are pretty reliable, Ive only had to rebuild one in the past few years. The 2.5 STI engines (Hawk and hatch) are the ones that fail. I get numerous calls everyweek for quotes on these and I have at least one in the workshop every day being worked on.

Just to add I've just rebuilt a Forester STI 2.5 as well.

Having just purchased a standard WRX Hawkeye I was thinking I would need to have it forged immediately. The more I research the more I read conflicting opinions.

Looks like you can add mine to the list, dropped off at Subaru 4 You today ready for the engine strip to begin on Monday

Suspected ringland on a 60000 miler of which I've only done 8000 and had 10 trips to the garage in 7 months trying to get to the bottom of the hesitation/misfire. Bugger.....

i know it's early,

but any advice on the 2015 models? I've got one ordered for July. Always been under the impression that subaru were bullet proof, but now my bum is squeaking a little bit

Same engine.....so it will always play with your mind, hence why i got rid of my 2011 saloon, spoiled the fun....

the 2012 did have a few go bang, but you won't hear much as there were only a few 100 sold, the USA forums however are littered.
The 2015 model i don't seem to see many, however again i think the love was lost between the 2008 and the 2012 from a lot of members and we all moved allegiance.

the 2015 is the Old 2.5 engine with High tax 485 a year and low MPG, but if its in your blood then MINE FYI served me well 3 years and not any issues at all.

I suppose your options are Golf R and S3 or M135 ? thats where i looked before i got the A45, if Subaru had give a toss about what they release rather than Milk an old outdated Block, a lot of us would have stayed. but TAX MPG can we all got cheaper elsewhere in other brands and as as Fast if not faster

It seems that failure is almost inevitable on the sti lumps with even the slightest power increases.

Anyone know what the chances are on a standard sti without PPP?

Date bought:21/07/2012
Mileage:52
Date of failure:01/05/2015
Mileage: 27,000
Outcome: Replaced Pistons and Ring under warranty in May 2015 but wouldn't warrant their parts or work after July 2015 (when the cars warranty runs out)

Very similar story really

Date bought:14/07/2011
Mileage:0
Date of failure:24/05/2014
Mileage: 18,500
Outcome: Block heads cams (forged Pistons and clutch at my expense) pump and Ring under warranty in mid June 2014 but wouldn't warrant their parts or work up to end July 2014(when the cars warranty runs out) so 6weeks ish

Disappointing really but that's their rules.

But we were both lucky, though I didn't think so at the time, at least the engine went in warranty and not 2 months later.

Tony

Subaru have had their day, and appalling customer service from that bunch in the UK will see their demise.
How many cars can they be selling really?

Some dealers are totaly uselss, some are not and Subaru UK are a PITA.

My dad bought an XV about 3 months ago and we went to 3 dealers who were clueless even about the product they are selling, we final found Europa Subaru up at sheffield after a couple of recommendations and they were very good. No issues yet to know about aftersales though

Apparantly, I'm told by the guy in the pub (works for IM) they sold an extra 500 or so this year so far

Would like to know what and where...there's no dealers round here for miles and I highly doubt they'll be Imprezas.

Isuzu sales are also up to...which is IM's main bread and butter.

Well yea depends on the location, Mangoletsi in Cheshire sold all their allocation of new STi's twice over, one of which was mine.

There's currently 70 subaru dealers, so if each sold 5 thats still only 350
