A mate out here has a petrol one and tbh I wasn't that impresses, i'd much rather have my Blob WRX wagon PPP, does everything better and 4 wheel drive too, fuel consumptions no different either, but he does have a lead foot so runs his on gas, he's also just had to source a replacement engine and box at a cost of £2000, saw him recently and he said he's still got problems with it.

I did a fair few miles in the TDi version. It was ok, but felt cheap compared to my BMW, which is a much nicer place to be than the VRS.

I have one Mk1 Octavia vRS 1.8T petrol, and your short term assessment couldn't be further from the truth.

Mine is used everyday for work and it's a fantastic car. Huge boot, good rear leg room (something subarus are awful for !) comfortable ride, good acceleration and very nibble. Mine has cruise control and parking sensors and it does everything you need of a car and only costs £1500-£2000

I get 40-45 mpg with careful driving and 30-40 if I want to enjoy the lanes

You can chuck it about with ease and it has loads of grip

I wouldn't bother with a WRX if you want civilised ride quality, practicality and economy. The MK1 vRS are excellent IMHO

@53, just saying it how it was for me, he's had a fair bit of trouble with his and still not able to get it right and has spent a small fortune, your right about rear leg room in subaru's though, but since I only carry people in the back about once a year and i'm in the front, it's not a problem.

I bought mine with FSH and a file of receipts It's paid for itself already in petrol

My classic would only do 16mpg due to it's state of tune and relatively short distance to work. It would only just be coming off choke (in old money ) before we got there.

24 extra mpg has saved me £2k in over 8 months

How on earth do you get that sort of economy?

I have had a few cars with the VAG 1.8t engine and have struggled to get above 30 unless driving very very carefully.

I drive for a living, eco driving certificated lol Most people have too heavy a right foot for both accelerator and brake and don't use the correct gear for the right speed or don't have enough foresight to judge speed and road deviations It's all about smoothness and calm driving.

This is my previous record before I topped 45mpg

Changing before 2k and turning off all the unnecessary **** people have running as they drive along blissfully pissing away mpg helps.

My old 51 plate 1.8T Passat wasn't as good, perhaps it's heavier or I was more reckless back then

Had my one for a year now - really miss the STI, but the VRS is just soooooo good.......... In posers white, but I am from Essex..

Fuel economy with my Petrol, Manual Mk2 VRS is great - a recent trip round the M25 on a Saturday night to Woking in Surrey got me 47.2 mpg - OK, I was only poodling along at 65-70mph most of the way (apart from 13 miles of road works at 50mph) - but I wasn't bothered about flooring it - it was only a family gathering so didn't need to....

Seems to average 35mpg on the daily runs, so 13-14mpg more than the Scoob - Road Tax (on mine at least) is £200 - 2nd Service at a Skoda Dealer in Walthamstow cost me £210 all in, so way cheaper than the Scoob...........

Depending on what version you look out for, all I would say is to ask if the car has any problems with the rear tyres "sawtoothing" as it's a common problem - easily solved with a Hunter 4 wheel alignment check done....... but anything else you want to ask - pop over to Briskoda.net and check out the forums.

I've done it it's pretty accurate calculating mileage against fuel receipts

Ah, I assumed you, meant you could get that sort of MPG driving 'normally'

My WRX will do late 30's MPG if I keep it below 2k, and 25-28 driving normally. This was about what my mk4 golf 1.8t would do and better than my passat with the same engine did.

If economy was the aim, I would just get a diesel or cycle.

I ran a Octavia l&K which was the top of the range luxury Octavia. Desel for 6 years 78 k miles and was a fantastic car apart from rust on a tailgate which was a recall it never had any problems

One of the most reliable cars ive ever had
Build quality excellent ( remember it vag parts )
Parts and servicing cheap

Why do lots of taxi drivers run octavias
Built to last

Why. It go onto Briskoda which is the SN on Skoda owners lots of great advice over there on problems and maybe a couple of decent cars on sale

Vrs is a great car and good for kids / passengers and boot is massive
The wife always moans now with the nismos boot for the shopping trip
