non of those will come close to your scoob, other than the mazda 6 mps, never driven the mps version, but have had a 6 ts 2 and that was a cracking car, really regret getting rid of it to be honest as it had everything you could wish for, was great to drive, comfortable etc etc, however a turbo and 4 wheel drive system adds a lot of difference to a car, although it does get some excellent write ups.

I've got a Vectra VXR. I can tell you that it decently quick on, fantastic mid range and although it won't out handle your Scooby in the twisties, it will give the standard STI a scare (in the dry).
Town driving only, I'm getting 23mpg. Mixed you'll get 27-29mpg and on the motor, driven around the 70-80 you can get late 30's to mid 40's depending on traffic.
Took it to Holland last year and it was truly faultless. Extremely smooth on the motorway while feeling suprisingly refreshed when I stopped to for fuel.
From Edinburgh to Utrecht it cost me £110 quid including a little jolly with an M3 and a Focus RS.
Sounds great when you give it the beans. The only gripe and it's just a little one, is the gear box is a little tough when the car is cold. But adds to the feeling that you are driving something that is quite heavy duty.

I'd say the MPS. 2.3T with 256bhp, 4 wheels drive and all the Comforts you can want! 0-60 is 6.6 secs. Top speed is 149mph.
On youtube Clarkson loves it!
Just My thoughts mate!
That's what I'd go for Next.
My mate has the 2.3 Sport. That Only 166bhp. Picks up well and really nice to drive

I've got the Vectra VXR on TMS Stage 1 - 300bhp and 400lbs/ft Torque. Easily as quick in a straight line as my old Hawkeye STi with PPP - which was rolling roaded at 316/335. As someone has already pointed out, you wont get close to 4WD cars off the line or on the country roads but in a straight line the Vectra VXR is very quick even in standard form.
This has been pointed out before and it's bull to be quite honest. What the TG review didnt tell you, was that they couldn't switch off the traction control properly so decided to start pulling fuses in an attempt to disable it. In doing so they also removed the IDS and dampening settings of the VXR suspension.
If you want a proper unbiased review of the Vectra VXR then you should read EVO's review and bear in mind the version they are talking about is the slower 255PS version NOT the updated 280PS version.

I didn't realise that about the traction control.
As for performance / £, not much touches them. Seeing how much quicker (in a straight line) a VXR was than my older (e46) 330ci, the vectra being standard power, I was very impressed.
I would still be very tempted by the ST220 though. It is lacking in low-down torque and won't produce great times getting away from a standstill (although overall it matches my 330 - bit faster here, bit slower there), but the handling is lovely and it has one of the greatest sounding engines I've ever heard and is extremely free revving.

I considered trading the ST TDCI for an ST220, but in all honesty when I test drove 2 ST220's the performance of a standard ST220 wasn't that much better than well modded ST TDCI - that was partly what prompted me to sell in favour of the Scooby at the time.
IMO, there's no competition in terms of power between the ST220 and the Vec VXR. The VXR has roughly 60bhp on the ST and masses more torque because of the turbo. Both cars weigh almost exactly the same as well. It's the same story in terms of handeling as well - both are big family cars so neither are going to out perform a Scooby or EVO on the twisties but they do a good job of getting the car pointing in the right direction and then catching up on the straights.

Yes there's no doubt the VXR is loads quicker than the ST220 but unless the buyer is very performance focussed there are still good reasons why they might find the ST a satisfying car.

My brother has an MPS and he loves it, its go every extra you could ever want and is very quick and handles excellent.
Sounds even better now he's put a dual custom exhaust on and had the remap.
