Default any know if you can read error codes from a pug 206 1.1lx

Currently driving my wifes car and the engine management light has come on indicating a fault. Car still appears to drive fine and will rev cleanly (albeit at a 1.1 rate )

Does anyone know if you can read the error codes as some other cars you can short some pins and it will flash the code on the dash similar to the early classics

Cheers for any replies

No, petrol cars from 01 are EOBD via a 16-pin diagnostic socket, to read the code you will need some form of scanner like this..

Engine Fault Code Reader for all 2001+ petrol and 2004+ diesel cars (GCR05) :: Gendan Automotive Products

Which will give you the fault code then you just research the definition.

cheers

I ordered a reader last night from ebay, there was one similar to the above for £26 however I went for a slightly cheaper one that you use a laptop for, reason for this is that you also get some fancy software that allows real time logging as well. I can pretend to be a mapper on my drive!!!

There is some good opensource (free) software out there, this is good..

ScanTool.net - Software - ScanTool.net

Features:

The program lets you perform the following operations:

* Read diagnostic trouble codes, both generic and manufacturer-specific, and display their meaning (over 3000 generic code definitions in the database).
* Clear trouble codes and turn off the MIL ("Check Engine" light)
* Display current sensor data, including:
o Engine RPM
o Calculated Load Value
o Coolant Temperature
o Fuel System Status
o Vehicle Speed
o Short Term Fuel Trim
o Long Term Fuel Trim
o Intake Manifold Pressure
o Timing Advance
o Intake Air Temperature
o Air Flow Rate
o Absolute Throttle Position
o Oxygen sensor voltages/associated short term fuel trims
o Fuel System status
o Fuel Pressure
o Many others...
Did you buy an ELM interface?

The 327 is a good chipset, there is loads of software out for it, I dont think you can modify the ECU or read ABS,Suspension, Airbags,Alarms etc with it, someone may have figured a way, not sure.
