Q7 - To Lease or not to Lease

Q7 - To Lease or not to Lease
.....that is the question.
Finally decided that the X5 has to go and Q7 is going to be the replacement.
Brand new this car will cost 42k for the 3.0 Diesel S-Line (gotta have all the toys and the big rims ).
I can lease this for 2 years at a cost of 15k.
So my question is.....will a 2 year old Audi with approx 20k miles be worth 27k on the second hand market? I suppose it would really need to be worth nearer 29k for me to be bothered with the hastle of selling it.......

Buy it, run it for 2 years, look after it and then sell it privately would be my way of doing it.

I personally would lease to get total piece of mind against loony eco warrior politicians cooking up more SUV unfriendly scams over the next 2 years.
The SUV market is not as robust now as it was a couple of years back and I reckon you will do well to get much more than 27k when time comes to sell.

One thing you haven't factored in is the cost of buying it...i.e. the "lost opportunity cost" or interest. If you bought the vehicle rather than leasing it, you'd be losing the interest on 42K (or paying interest on a 42K loan - which would be higher) - either way, a cost you need to factor in.
The interest on 42K over 2 years at 5% (assume gross for now) is approx. 4K, non-compound. If you have 42K cash, and you stuck this into a mortgage, even better, as it would be effectively "tax free".
For me, this would make your lease option a no-brainer.
The only alternative to me would be to get a second hand one, but they're like hens-teeth at the moment, and still a high price.

645 - a great point, hadn't thought about it that way, I have the cash available so sticking it away in and account / investing it, could just be the way to go.
I have a test drive of the 3.0 Diesle S-Line on sunday and Audi are doing a £520 + VAT deal at the moment, so looks like leasing it is.

The above deal states 6 months worth of payments up front.......thats a pretty big deposit, plus you are more than likely have to pay VAT on top of the quoted price unless you are a business user....

Im in a similar situation, were thinking of a new car quite probably an A4 Sline special edition and working out the lease costs over 3 years seems to make sense especially as the money can stay in the bank account.
Am I right in saying that you can claim VAT back on a lease car but not on one you buy ?.......Wife's business.

Most deals for the Q7 3.0TDI S-line are around £490 + vat a month (that's a 3 + 23 payment profile 10k miles per annum)
There are some cracking lease deals about at the moment, I keep see some big deals on the A6 ...... £270 + vat a month for an A6 2.0TDI SE with 6CD & Sat Nav (3 + 23 payments 10k miles p.a.) That's a hell of a lot of car for the money.

Hmm..........following on from this thread, Ive been looking a bit further into leasing Q7s, they do seem very good value at around £450+VAT, as they are £40k+ to buy....
Also been looking at the Chrysler 300c.....(not everyones cuppa, I know!)....£339+VAT, on a 12 month contract!!! Im tempted to try one out, and use the money Ive got tied up in my current car to invest...

OK, so test drove the 3.0TD1 S-Line yesterday...very nice.
Decided to go ahead and buy on a Contract Hire basis.
I appreciate that there are loads of advertised rates as mentioned above, but the reality is quite different.
Audi are doing a £519+VAT pm, 2 years, 10k miles per year. I have yet to find a leasing company to beat it and that includes all the ones advertising @ £450pm etc.............until you actually get on the phone to them and spec out the exact car you want, you don't know whatyou will be paying.
Anyway I am doing this with a personal lease and with about £1500 worth of options, total cost is £646.88 * 26 = £16,818.88 total cost over 2 years.
Should be ready in about 8 weeks
anyone want to but an X5?

Better deal just in, lucky I wasn't due to sign the paper work until friday.
Frontier Car Lease have offered the same spec for £620 * 26 = £16120, so nice little saving there.

Not too many to be honest, the S-Line come pretty well speced.
I have added:
Audi Parking System Plus £ 275
Folding Tables on Rear of Front Seats £75
Rear Side Curtain Airbags £250
Heated Front Seats £275
Metallic Paint £650
There were loads of options as you say, but you basically pay full price for the options and then hand the car back after 2 years, so tried to keep it to a minimum.

Nice1!
£620 sounds on the steeper side, although as you say, the advertised rates are often slightly deceptive in that they omit to mention the full spec of the vehicle....
The only drawback I can see with such a deal, is that you are effectively obliged to keep the car for 2 years, which for me, is too long...I like changing cars every 6 months !

A lot of the 'cheap' Q7 deals are on the base model, not the SE of the S-Line. I feel as though I have done the best I can. I am also through Audi direct so I feel a little more comfortable than I would if I had randomly picked some internet place.
So you want the X5 then?
