Default POLO G40

What are these little cars like, just spotted one and it looked kind of nice.

What are these like to drive/own, and whats the performance like on them.

Modification potential?

Owned one about 10 yrs ago.

Great fun - loved it to bits.
Fast - but with awful brakes - the worst I've ever experienced and its well known. Some changes include braided hoses, rear disc conversion (its drum brakes as standard on the back), use of DOT 5.1 and changing to a Passat Servo all can help - as well as pads (beware that the front discs can warp very easily).

Modification potential - well it can be chipped to about 140bhp (it weighs about 850kg) with great torque for what is a supercharged 1.3 engine.

Some go down changing the size of the 'charger pulley wheel to make it small and therefore rev higher (67mm seems to ring a bell). Problem is that the G-lader supercharger life is shortened with this modification.

One last thing is the Supercharger itself. It was hand built on the 400 or so UK cars because of problems with tolerances at the time. A lot therefore need rebuilds at about 60k miles.....

The only other problem I am aware of was that with those wanting more power (eg rebore to 1.5l, pulley and chip) was that cylinder 3 was prone to melting/overheating.

I always keep a look out for them because I'd have one as a third car without thinking, but most have large mileage nowadays.

Hope that helps

And with mod's probably low 7's 0-60mph.
With an AMD rechip mine was pulling 150bhp and 150lbft torque - enough to make things interesting

£1900 and reserve not met.

Not sure if that's a good price or not

Well the average Fiesta Turbo goes for between £2000-£2500, just from what I have heard today I know what I would go for if given the choice.

What others in that bracket?

Good point. I've only ever seen one G40.

A Charade turbo or Starlet turbo aren't bad alternatives

I've passengered in a Starlet running circa 160 bhp.
I must admit, it made me wonder why I've spent the amount of money I have on the scoob.
The little thing was rapid (albeit, not a scooby eater but raised a few eyebrows) and stood the bloke less than 4k.

Bloody hell....... spoken to the guy - wants £4k+ for it......
Not sure its worth that despite the VAG history and 3 owners......

Maybe time to rethink.

Mate, if you want a sleeper go for either the 1990 - 1994 shaped (BG models) Mazda 323 GTX or GTR which are both turbo's. Rarer than rocking horses .... but very tunable. Slightly bigger than a Starlet but AWD and very usable.

Esh

PS I'd have one again if I didn't have a second car.

My bro has a minted black G40 as his 2nd car (other is a modded Ibiza Cupra). His G is modded and did a 14.7 quarter mile @ Crail beating a few newage wrx's . Just after putting a new cam in so will see how it goes in the future. Goes like stink as it is!!

Hey, a mate used to own one and i nearly bought it off him but was left a bit indecisive after the test drive.

Brakes were terrible, so plain inside and i didnt find it that quick, i used to own a Corrado G60 so was used to the Vw supercharged engine but was left not too impressed overall.

Can see why they have a colt following thou but rather spend my hard earned elsewhere.

Ah yes but you can uprate the brake using the G60 brakes and believe me it will stop quicker than my classic my AP 6 pots

The brakes are terrible in standard form. I had a 1.3 Polo S Coupe. Nice little car except trying to stop it from any speed. No servo..............

You do need a strong leg but then if mclaren decided against a servo in the F1 then a 750kg polo with uprated brakes should be easy.....unless you are a ***** of course

They handle badly until you drop them on decent suspension and uprate the anti roll bar support brackets.
