I had one of these years bag - an absolute blast !
Real wolf in sheeps clothing.
My mate at the time had a 1.9 205 GTi & it was easily as quick as that (apart from round the bends !) so that gives you an idea of performance. Supercharged too so no lag.
But the beauty of these cars is that they look just like the 1litre versions...the look on peoples faces as you vanished into the distance was classic !!

Similar sounding to the Dihatsu (spelling?) Charade GTti.
1L, 3 cylinder turbo i believe. Aparrently would murder an XR3i.

http://www.polog40.co.uk/

Although unique to the G40 model, the G40 engine (code PY) is closely based on the standard 1272cc Polo power plant. This conventional 4 cylinder water cooled design uses a cast iron block and alloy head. In the G40 it is transversely mounted, coupled to a manual 5 speed gearbox via an uprated clutch. Its main difference from other Polo engines is the addition of a supercharger to significantly boost power output.

Couldn't find any performance figs but from memory they did 0-60 in about 7.5 secs & 125 top end.

Quick car, bit of a sleeper as nobody knew that it was, shame about the handling.

I nearly bought one of these actually.

glad you all have heard of it, it seems the one thing everyone says is
sheep in wolfs clothing that is so true.

with a bit of modding you can get 14s 1/4 miles out of them.
150bhp is easy to get to
basically VW restricted it at the time, otherwise it would have been faster then the gti and they didnt want that.
airbox restrictors throttle body restrictors etc. once you remove these and get a chip and pulley you at 150bhp. sub 7 second 0-60

handling is always the problem.
but you can uprate a few things to help out.

chers for your replys

Question

To just get this clear, are you talking about actually racing one? Or being a muppet on the road?

Ive got a Corrado G60, the thing to watch out for in the G40 is the supercharger although they are more reliable than a G60 larger one still if its been surviced by jabersport should be ok. Make sure the belts have been changed inc supercharger one!

instant boost but once chipped the fuel economy is crap!!!

Cool

well for crap you can still get anything from 200-300 on 9 gallon tank which is not too bad. even for a heavy modded car

G40 are way more reliable then G60. I know of about 15 G40 and none have had problems with there chargers. even ones that have never had a service. but if you get them serviced every 50k should be ok

Talking

dmward71,

A mate of mine used to have one of these and it was great fun.

It had the BBS alloys and was slightly lowered. Looked very much like the 1.3 GT(75bhp) jobbie and surprised plenty of other motorists ! He had his chipped to around 125bhp(113bhp as standard) and it chuffing flew !! The speedo was the one out of the Corrado and went all the way up to 160mph. Why ? Mind you, it felt like it could get up there !! Drank petrol though..

Apparently you can pick them up for around £1500 now, but most have been sha99ed !!

Ooooh the memories..

anyone got any pics ??

John
