It depends what he wants really, does he want to for go reliability for ultimate performance or does he want a good all round hot hatch?
If the latter what about a nice MK2 Golf Gti, or Pug 205Gti, dont knock the Pug, My buddy had one with over 130k on it said it was the most reliable car he had owned!
If it must be a 200sx get the most unmolested example you can find, its a waste of time paying a grand for one and having the engine or turbo go bang within a few weeks.
Sports saloon - Primera GT, great great handling - maybe an E30 BMW 325i
decisions, decisions!

Charade GTti. Pick up a copy of Retro Cars and have a look at www.gttioc.co.uk and bbs.daihard.org. Having driven most of the hot hatches I would say this is easily more fun than a Golf or 205Gti.
Great fun car and can be easily tuned to scare much bigger cars and they can be made to handle very nicely with a set of polybushes and decent shocks if the old ones are tired.
Oh and quite easy to work on yourself too
There are a couple for sale right now and maybe a very good one in Kent coming up for sale soon.

A 200sx... smokey turbo, gaskets, bearings... hmmmm I would'nt expect too much for 1k.... however 1k buys a lot of hot hatch these days IMHO

They are quite cool, but you have to be a real fan to get on with those looks.
