MY01 - 1000 Mile service ?
#1
Having finally clocked up nearly 1000 miles I am still undecided whether to bother with the 1000 mile service, the dutch dealer said not to, although the service book has a place in it for the stamp.
What do you reckon, and what does the service consist of & how much does it cost ?

Ask far as I know it's a general visual check, a run through any niggles and an oil change ( for UK spec ). It only takes an hour, so it won't be a lot.
( Mine goes in tomorrow, so I'll mail you with the detailed list in 24hrs or so )

Yes do it. Firstly because it gives IM Less of an excuse for any warranty claims, secondly you'll flush out all that running in oil and so can start to use more of the performance, and lastly because it will make the car easier to sell in a few years time. It won't have a FSH if you skip this one, regardless of what the Dutch dealer said.

Get the service done. Basically they need to change the engine oil as it has "running in" oil in it that is quite thin so that the engine/gearbox beds in properly (thats what i was told) and they need to put the proper thick oil in so that the engine doesnt get damaged when you start revving it higher.
also the warranty will be invalid if you dont get it done.
dont expect the engine to start to loosen up until at least 2500 miles. mine didnt !

But it has been scientifically proven that some dealers know nothing. I personnaly will be taking no such chances with mine when it arrives!

Cheers for the comments,I have decided to get it done just for the warrenty if nothing else,I'll still look forward to hearing off 'Stevem2k' with any further details.
When I picked the car up the nice little Dutch fella said not to bother with the service & a tag was hanging from the mirror with the next service due date on it(7500),and the words 'winter oil' ?

Sorry for the late response ...
The 1000 mile service was an oil change ( the uk spec cars definately _do_ have thin oil in for the first 1k ), a visual check all round and a chance for you to let them know if all is well ( and have a whinge if it isn't ).
Took just over an hour all in, and £45 quid (£25 of which was the new oil & filter and sump seal).
They also fitted the stainless door kick plates which I asked for when I ordered the car and they 'forgot' to put on, and some driving/fog light guards that I had asked for in the meantime - which turned out to be cracked when they came out of the box, so they fitted a new set yesterday.
Get it done. You've shelled out 20 grand on a new car, why scrimp on £45 quid ?
JZA - please check with your dealer - ask them why other dealers do this as a matter of course ?

Sorry SteveM,
They didnt say that i shouldnt have the service - they were pushy that i did and wanted the car in at exactly 1000 miles. Just that the service manager said that the new MY01 didnt need a 1000 mile run-in - you could go for it from the off (but he said if he owned the car he'd still be careful up to 1000 miles!!)
He said that the new MY01 DOES NOT have special running in oil - its ready to go from the off!!

Been here before, but I don't reckon that Subaru in Japan would take the trouble to put so called "running in oil" in UK spec RHD cars, and not bother in LHD Euro spec Scoobies. If the engine needed it, shouldn't they all have it?
Or do LHD's have running in oil in the car for the first 12000km (7500 miles)?
Probably a Subaru UK ploy to spend an extra £90 on a first service. Who knows?
