Is the driving position bad? So not only have you not test driven one, you've never even sat in one either Yes, that's right, that's TWO 's
Mate has a 172 cup which is fun. Sure the 182 is fun too.

I had a 172 Cup until recently, when I wrote it off trying to defy the laws of physics on a roundabout. Very fast, exceptional handling, good fuel economy( 34.5 mpg ), strong mechanicals, crap plastics, rattles and shakes in stereo surround sound, uncomfortable and rather hopeless driving position unless you are built like an Orangutang with long arms and short legs.
So, both very good and bad in a frustrating mix. If your priorities are fast and furious, go for it!

Driving position is sh!te, but you can live with it, it doesn't make it un drivable, just niggles! But it's arguably the best hot hatch in it's class, and also resonably priced, I doubt you'll be disspointed, till the bring out the 220bhp trophy near Christmas!

I have a 172 Cup and I don't find the driving position a problem. Yes it could be better, the chair is too high and could do with a bit more bolstering, but other than that it's a hell of a good car. I'm sure the build quality could be better, but at the price I paid with Climate Control £11500 I wasn't expecting BMW/VW quality. Having said that, my car has been totally reliable and has no faults at all and puts a smile on my face everytime I drive it.

i had a 172 cup. within the first three weeks the catalytic converter decided to fall to bits, the windscreen wiper motor detached itself in the middle of a storm, the dash rattled luck **** and a piece of trim on the door kept coming off. good fun to drive, but i'll never have another.

The driving position you get used to after a few days. You won't even notice it after that. As for build, my 172 CUP took a few hundred miles before rattles appeared. My new Cooper S rattled the minute I drove it off the forecourt.

get an average of 35mpg from the 172 and that's not taking it easy
Engines for the performance they offer are very economical imho.
My old 19 no matter how I drove it it wouldn't break 30mpg, average was around 27
Still, that car's dead now :'(
