911 carrera 4
As above on a G plate, always wanted this shape, thought I'd trade in the STI and get one.
Trouble is, today I followed one till about "70 ish" (where I thought I saw old bill and slammed on the anchors) and I was shifting up early and easily keeping pace
I'm totally disapointed, I used to really really want one
Maybe I need a newer plate one?

The 964 has 250 bhp. at higher speeds it would be a match for the STi (just). Overall, you'd be dissapointed comming from a STi to a 964. I myself have just come from a STi Type R (310bhp) to a 996 and love it! Though they are fairly evenly matched. It's been said before; the Type R is faster off the mark to 60, but in most other instances the 996 is a little quicker, though not by loads. And of course the power delivery is very different, you'll swear blind that the STi is at least 10 times faster if you drove a 964.
But remember it's not just a car, it's a 911!

A 300bhp Sti is going to be quicker than a 250 bhp 964.........
But you dont just buy a 15 year old and expect it to be as quick as a new car do you?
Surely you buy them for the driving experience it gives you....the noise....the emotions etc?
If you just want to go fast as cheaply as you can, stick with what you have.

My mate has a 240bhp WRX waggon and my 996 eats it! Even in the wet I pull away strongly from him.
If it's simply performance your after then stick with what you've got. I can only go on a Type R here as it's the only scoob I've owned, but the difference in performance between the two does not warrant the price difference if looking solely for a performance car.
However, not only does the 996 more than match the Type R for performance (again, not by much) in every other area you care to think of, it beats it with ease. The attention the car gets is unreal (maybe partly down to the colour and GT3 kit), and nearly all positive (a surprise). The build quality is in a completely different league!
I do still miss the scoob on the odd occasion. The kick in the back, the noise, the raw ***** out, no nonsense way it approaches being a sports car. I'd have another Type R in a heart beat! Type R for me really is the best of all the classics, so different to all other scoob's, ******* awesome!
I'm very tempted to get another and drop in a 2.5 then proceed to mod the living crap out of it

The thing is, someone has always got either a faster car or more talent than you in the end, so I may as well travel around in a great looking motoring icon (I'm talking about a 911 !)

964 is my fave shape to. Just too many problems with them put me right off. 993 is better apparently but there's the cost.
Your scoob will be a far more reliable motor, quicker to. It depends what you want as other posts on this thread have stated.
LHD 993 would be an idea??

Only thing I've seen him have problems with is battery going flat.

My partner (Gina) has just bought a G plate Carrera 4 and I have a 02 STi with ~310 hp and modified suspension and exhaust, so I can make a direct comparison.
The 964 definately feels slower and I am sure is slower. 0-60 and 0-100 are not too different but in gear times of the Scoob are much quicker. My modified STi has sharper steering, but it has done 30,000 miles against the 964's 84,000. However, there is more feel in the 964's steering than my STi despite Prodrive springs, antilift kit etc,.
The 964 as standard is much quieter than my STi (sports cat exhaust with afterburner), but we plan to add a sports exhaust with cat bypass (legal on 1989 car) to make it sound better. Driving position and heating are much better on the Scoob. Build quality is much the same in terms of rattles, but then the 964 has done nearly three times the miles.
Depreciation will be much less on the 964.
Looks are a personal thing. Both look great to me, but the 964 is a Porsche 911. However, when we travel in convoy everyone looks at the Scoob rather than the 964.
When I change by STi I will be considering a 993 or possibly a 996. 993s are supposed to be the best built 911s with the best resolved handling of the air cooled cars. They also suffer low depreciation which is one of the reasons I am considering one. The 996 is definately a better drive, but and this is a BIG but, it may cost you thousands to keep running due to the rear main seal (RMS) problem that suposedly afflicts around 25% of them and can come to light at any time. Some people have had the RMS replaced 5 times, at 5-6 hours labour a time. If the car is out of warranty this will be very expensive. It may also require replacement gearbox or engine. Porsche are not acknowledging the problem and do not seem to know how to fix it. The Boxster has the same RMS problem (check out the Remlist forum).
The 964 also has a reutation for oil leaks, but this is exagerated and easily fixed. Most cars in good condition have been soughted by now. Anyway an inspection by a Porsche specialist will soon determine if there is a problem.
Best thing to do is to try a few 911s and do a lot of research before selling the Scoob.

Funny you say that most of your attention is positive.
I drive a 996 Turbo & get nothing but hassle & bad attitude everywhere I go.
Before that I had a 996 C4S & a C2......those too attracted lots of bad attention. Didn't have anything like that in my STi4.
I usually don't really mind, though I often have my kids in the car.

Also, like any old Porsche, they cost a bomb to run. Prices are wildly over inflated. i also question this "ultimate reliability" claim.
You have to love them to own them (old Porsches) cos if you don't, you soon start to hate them!!

993 around £300 (1 day).
Above prices are from 911 specialists not main dealers and assume nothing is wrong. In practice given age of such cars you will probably have to pay more than the above.
By comparison my 02 Sti requires 10k mile services (£150-200), but I also arrange for a 5k oil change given its state of tune. 30k service was over £400. 60k service on a Scoob is typically over £500. These are main dealer prices and considerable savings can be made with specialists.
However, the main running cost is depreciation. Over 3 years my Sti will have lost 50% of its original value which equates to around £14k. A good 964 or 993 will only lose a few thousand over a similar period. Also a 911 will probably be slightly more economical on petrol. In addition the body paint on an aircooled 911 is much more resitant to stones etc. than Scooby paintwork.

It's true that no one will let you out at a junction, so I guess you could say I've noticed some difference, but not as bad as I thought, though there's still time!
I to had a STi4 (Type R) and the car itself didn't attract anywhere near the amount of attention that the 911 does, but loads more than either BM's. The only negative attention the scoob got was from pc plod, got pulled 5 times in 1 year! Not one of those was for speeding.
I miss the camaraderie of scoob ownership, most people are right; Porsche drivers are w4nkers! (except us of course!).
