Default 535d!

This biturbo diesel has got to be one of the best cars ever made 272 bhp 560NM, 0-60 in 6.5 (only comes as an auto) and 8-10 ltrs diesel per 100km. BMW have definetly got it when it comes to engines. The new diesels are simply stunning.

I was chasing and 3.0 TDI A6 (225bhp) the other day in a Saab Aero turbo (250bhp stock) + k&n and exhaust and I simply could not catch it. It drove me nuts cause in third gear and upwards the Saab REALLY goes and I kept staring at that twin exhaust pointed downwards. I managed to close in slightly at the top of fourth gear but that Audi was in front of me all the way up to 240km/h. And it was not a highway so we did lots of overtakings from third gear and accelerated and every time it was the same. OK I had three people with me and the Audi guy was alone but I could not believe the pace of that diesel car anyway. Dont know what to expect of that Bee em it would probably obliterate my scooby!

The 535d is a 3 litre if I remember correctly. It's called the 530 Top in Germany, but the 535d in the UK. A convincing performance diesel.

Had a whizz in the old shape 530 diesel auto the other day.

And in terms of off-the-line grunt there is very little that can match it....makes the 535 petrol seem rather sluggish

And heres the best bit..that was with a knackered turbo - broken blade, unfortunately a common problem on the 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 diesels (carbon deposits break off exhaust manifold walls and hit the turbine blades). Lets hope they've sorted it on the lastest ones

the one you were in was probably 184bhp and 410nm, then you get the new shape single turbo three litre with 218 bhp and 500NM and then the 535d which is a three litre twin turbo and I am pretty confident its called 535d in Germany as well with 272bhp and 560NM. They could not get the manual gearbox to handle all that monstrous torque so it comes as an auto only and all the better for it. Pukka motor

Are you sure the saab is running right? My uncle had an A6 2.5 V6 TDI Quattro (the one with 180bhp) which admittedly won't quite be as fast as the 3.0 (225bhp one) and my classic shaped Impreza (with 270bhp) used to absolutely waste it in any gear except 5th! A 250bhp saab would probably be about the same as my scooby for 3rd gear acceleration?

Oil burners have come a long way

I had a flutter with a 320 CDI merc, not sure on the power but it was no match for the Volvo - although it has 55bhp more than ur saab, but it is auto and a volvo estate so bhp/tonne and whp will be around the same as urs - check for air leaks !

The Saab runs fine (15 000 miles and serviced regularly) and saxo you are right from third gear upwards on a smooth surface (where torque is not limited and traction control does not intervene) it is a match for my 280 bhp scoob! I have been in a 180bhp diesel A6 and it is a reasonable performer but nothing like the new generation believe me.
