Passat W8.
What are they like? Went past one on the A3 earlier. I moved over to the left lane as I was happy bumbling along at xx. He draws along side, waits a little, realises I'm not racing (spotted Police T5 earlier) and nips off.
Never heard of them before. Had a look at the web and they seem resonable. Looked nice.

The W8 was planned for the Audi A6 and the Phaeton. Then VW realized that the Motor is rattling to much, takes to much gas and has a low output ( they wanted to put them against Merc and BMW). So they said that they have a motor but no car which anyone would buy this motor with.
So they decided to put it into the Passat...and let Audi make another V8 (actual S4)

I think they are already a great used buy - especially in estate form as an A6 quattro alternative. The manual version got panned a bit at launch but even with the auto its still 275bhp. If you can afford the fuel it seems an under-rated used buy to me.

Was supposed to be going in the mk4 golf, obviously never happened. They had planned a W8 and W12 with 350bhp. There was a write up about it in Car magazine 3 years ago.

I reckon it'll be one of those cars that becomes a semi-classic just because it's a bizarre combination of body and engine .... anyone remember the Lancia Thema 8.32, which had the Ferrari 328 motor?
