I had a 1430, same bore as the 1380 lump but offset ground crank for a longer stroke.
My opinion? Well worth doing, my 1430 with standard MG Metro head and single 1 3/4" carb was as quick 0 - 80mph as a Vauxhall Cavalier GSi 2000 at which point I ran out of gears (wrong diff )
Find a copy of David Vizards Tuning BL's A-Series engine it will give you a great insight.
A common spec is 1380, balanced bottom end, stage 3 head, scatter cam and well set up 1 3/4" SU which will be torquey and pretty quick (should be a 100 or so bhp) 115bhp would put you into UK Scoob/CTR/Clio Cup PWR territory
It might be cheaper to go for a Metro Turbo engine install though and you can get the same power very easily. Some nutters have even tuned them for nearly 200bhp but reliability suffers.

I've had more Mini's than hot dinners, I'd advise you go for a 1340, with a wild head and cam, and either a single 1 3/4 su, or a webber!
the 1340's are more reliable than the 1380's, although if looked after and done right, there's nothing to fear in the 1380, it makes the centre block web a tad thin though!

Muppet suggestion: V8 Mini and another v8 mini
or more realistically....
Mini Turbo
And noticing that a Cavelier GSi 2000 was mentioned....there's a Mini tootling about with one of those lumps under the bonnet too

No such thing as a 1340cc Mini. Very common mistake...people who think they have 1340 Minis more than likely have 1330s.
Not much point in going for a long stroke 1430 over a 1380, they don't rev so well.
A 1380, with a nice head (nothing too wild, but you get what you pay for), a 286 cam, lightened and balanced, nice timing gear, centre main strap, twin 1 1/2 SUs, all the usual LCB etc., an electric fuel pump is a good idea. On the gearbox side a 3.44FD, straight cut drops (just for the noise ), twin pin diff and central oil pick up will have you a reliable little motor with plenty of torque and about 100bhp. More than enough to scare the boy racers Take it to a rolling road and have it properly set up, it makes a MASSIVE difference.
Make sure you get some nice brakes and suspension on it, as it'll have about 3 times the power as it had as standard ie. front drums are not acceptable!!

Too unreliable
Rich is right, can't beat a good 1380, unless its a transplant
As with all things you get what you pay for though. I can recommend Swiftune built units (eng and box)

Had an Avonbar 1380 mini cooper a long time back, never had any bother and it was real quick for a mini. Had a single 1 3/4" SU, a fast road cam, stage 2 head.
Avonbar and minisport are names I remember well.
Most fun in a car, until I got the scoob of course

I took my dad out in mine to prove it wasn't the deathtrap he thought it was. As we sailed through the red light and onward through the busy junction I began to regret my decision...
