Audi S2 Avant?
#1
I am thinking about a change in wheels - desperately don't want to leave the Subaru fold but practicality beckons...
Has anyone owned one? What are they like to drive and own? Are they expensive to run..? What should I look out for when buying?

Any advice 100% wellcome

Well put together and nice to drive but not cheap to maintain when things start to go wrong. Getting 20 - 25mpg depending on how heavy my foot is feeling at the time.

Hi
Ran a 1995 S2 coupe for 3 years. Great car.
Plus points: Great 5 pot engine (All Avants have the 230bhp/259 lb ft plus overboost engine), secure handling, build quality, reliability, insurance (£475 per year at 29), prices are low, high mileage no problem, rarity.
Bad points: Brakes, steering lacks feel compared to Scoob, 6 speed box is heavy, likes a drink.
I had no failures of any sort and only replaced brake discs / pads, bushes and routine servicing in the 50K miles I did on mine.
Then sold it for £1500 less than I paid for it. Not bad for 3 years of fast motoring.
Get a good properly looked after one and a its a hell of a car for the money.

RS2 in Nogaro blue...yes please!
As well as the extra 85 horses the RS gives you a great standard spec, is still seriously cool and has brakes that work.
However you need at least 15K and more likely 18K to get a nice RHD one. The regular S2 isnt exactly slow and for 6-8 grand is a lot more affordable. The S2 has no lag compared to the big turbo'd RS. It doesnt have the incredible boost either, but still is a seriously quick all rounder.
Depends how many pennies youve got.

tried one befroe i bought the scoob, the heavy gearbox put me right off, for me it ruined the driving experience, great car, stylish and very well put together, this one had a FASH and 120k on the clock and was still fresh apart from dodgy dash things, trip comp etc but I think thats a VAG issue anyway...
fairly solid machine but would bring it for a decent run before making a decision
Cheers

RS2 - in my dreams
The words "Likes a drink " sound familiar though WIll have a look over the next month or so at options. Seems like with these you really have to get it checked and make sure no expensive costs will be heading your way... True for most wheels really!

I ran a 1994 Avant for 3 years. No major work but what did need doing was expensive. Just be wary that many won't be sold with warranties due to their age and Audi parts are VERY expensive (even compared to Subaru).
My perspective on the gearbox and clutch was that-yes it was heavy but precise- but then it felt like it was up to its job and would last for ever.
The Scooby box just feels so feeble in comparision, never mind the juddering clutches that last 40,000 miles.
I sold my Avant at 100,000 miles and it was still on most orignal bits from new.
It is really a motorway and A road gobbler. It had rather poor steering feedback but the brakes were sorted by uprating the pads and discs quite cheaply to Pagid items.
