Question

Is this just a great car or what? I need one of these!

I know the 964 has some reliability problems, but how come they don't affect this car, or do they and as it is such a great car, they are ignored??

Does the 964 Turbo have the same faults? Or are they just plain scary?

.....I just know Fen is gonna answer.

Dave,

I don't honestly know. What I do recall is that the 964 has problems with a dual-mass flywheel (the RS may well not have one) and the dual-distributor (the RS would have this, I assume).

The RS is a 3.8 against the 964 being a 3.6, yes? If so there could be all manner of differences.

My knowledge of 911's gets weaker as we move on from the 3.2, TBH.

I'm a sucker for anything described as 'extreme', so I would love one too...

Loddrik2,

They are like chalk and cheese. Bodily the 964 was the last 911 with the original style big bulges in the front wings (the 993 being much flatter, front and back) but with more integrated bumpers than the earlier cars. The interior was subtly changed as well.

Mechanically the 993 is the last air-cooled Porsche but has modifications to the engine that make it more reliable and cheaper to run / service (hydraulic tappets are the biggie that springs to mind) and the rear suspension of the 993 is totally different. Later 993's have variable valve timing making them still more powerful than the early ones (that were more powerful than the 964 IIRC).

The 964 launched in 1989 (Carrera 4, the Carrera 2 came along in 1990) and was replaced by the 993 in 1993. The 993 then ran until 1997 when the 996 came out.

Nice one Dave!

The RS does have a different fly wheel.

The RS is a 3.6 blue printed engine with different valves etc.

The 3.8 is a rare beast indeed.

The 964 RS doesnt have the reliability problems because it was the end year of production '92-93 that it was made. In fact the same holds true for later 964's (often called the airbag model). The problem being barrel and piston design in the earlier engines - which was rectified later into production.

Servicing of 964's is the most expensive of all the 911's because of the twin spark design and the non-hydraulic tappets - hence servicing takes 2 days labour (they need adjustment when cold).

The 964 turbo doesnt have the same issues - its an older 3.3 litre turbo and bears no resemblence to the 3.6 engine.

Hope that answers some of the questions.

Oh and a few things about LHD 964 RS's - they are rough ! - in the sense - hard suspension, no power assistance, no sound deadening - not even an electric heated rear window !

They are fantastic to drive - but trying to live with 24/7

Th RS is blueprinted and tends not to suffer from the oil leaks that plague the std Carerra.

It does not have the dual-mass flywheel.

The distributor problem should be fixed in all RS's for sale by an OPC or good independant dealer - build up of ozone would corrode the belt that runs between the two distributors - fix was a small tube to vent the ozone. No biggie.

Suggest you ask technical RS-type questions on Pistonheads where several experts lurk!

Last months 911 & Porsche World was a special RS issue, and a good read too.

I've craved a 964 RS since I did a time trial day at Silverstone a couple of years back.

There were two there absolutley flying around, I was amazed how well they went against a well driven EVO VI.

Made me feel a bit ordinary in my STI.....
